Fated ~ Chapter 5
"That's the perfect name for you. I am Alvin."
I woke to the smell of delicious breakfast. I quickly got dressed and went downstairs. "Morning, Mom!" I said as I gave my mom a hug.
"Morning sweetie. How was your sleep?" My mom asked.
"It was wonderful." I smiled. A good night of sleep is always needed for the challenges ahead. I don't see dad so I assume that he went to work already.
I finished my breakfast and went back to my room to gather my things. I looked myself in the mirror. The white blouse with thin vertical blue stripes plus the gray trousers look good on me. I like business attires.
After looking around to see if I have everything, I close my bedroom door gently and went downstairs.
"Bye Mom!" I said.
"Have a good day honey!"
"I will." I replied as I put my shoes on. I open the wooden door then the iron door. Yes, my house has two doors for security purposes. A thief broke in once while everyone is not home and took my precious silver pocket-watch my grandpa left me.
That was the only thing that reminds me of him. Now that's gone too, just like my grandpa passes away a few years ago, I finally accepted the reality. After the incident, I made my parents to put another iron door in front of the wooden door, so it'll be harder to break in. My mom knew that the pocket-watch meant a lot to me, so she searched everywhere to find an identical one. It was no use. Even if she did find one, it wouldn't be the same. Nothing was the same after grandpa's death. It wasn't when I felt my nose running and saw my eyes red on the iron door that I realized I was crying. I took a deep breath and walk out the door. I shut both doors and locked them. Making sure that history won't repeat itself.
The morning is chilly and I feel goosebumps on my arms as the cool breeze runs over me. It's 7:10 and the sun has just barely woken. Please don't rain today. I prayed. Most of my classmates drive to school, and apparently, I am not most of them. It is freezing. If I knew that its this cold, would've worn more cloths. I look at my watch and it reads 7:30. A huge gush of wind blows toward me. Sand got into my eyes and my first reaction was to rub it. With my eyes closed of course. Ouch, ouch. Ugh... Stupid wind. It never gets tired of playing the sand game on me. When my eyes don't feel irritated anymore, I slowly open them. I see a car driving towards me. It looked so familiar. I've seen it before. As it gets closer and closer, the driver comes into the picture. "Alvin?" I thought out loud. Alvin slows down the car as it approaches me and eventually stops. I stood there, motionless. Alvin comes out of his car and runs to me.
"Miss Valentine, it's freezing. Let me drive you to school." Alvin said.
I hesitated. I am not ready to face him again. Not until I get my mind straight. I want to tell him no, but my mouth feels numb. I try to say the word but it came out a blur. I could see Alvin's confused countenance. Oh no, I am not turning into a bug like Gregor in The Metamorphosis, right? That's impossible. Alvin would have run away and scream from the top of his lungs if I turned into a human-size bug. I sighed and shook my head. The wind is ready to play games on me again as it gently dances around me. The cold air traveled straight into my bone and I shivered. I lost this time. I look at Alvin again and see his pleading eyes. I nodded my head and was about to move when my legs disobeyed me.
Come on, move it! I thought. I become frightened. What the heck is wrong with my legs? I tried harder and they're still not moving. I look at Alvin deep into the eye and pointed to my legs. He seemed confused at first. I mouthed 'my legs can't move' and Alvin slowly fits everything into place.
"Your legs can't move?" He repeated. I nodded hard.
"Okay, hold on!" Uh-oh. What is he going to do? Alvin bends down a little on my right side and put a hand on my arm and another hand on the region behind my knee. Without any trouble, he lifted me up as if he was picking up a 10-pound block with a single finger. Now I am lying in Alvin's hands in bridal style. I couldn't really scream, because who knows what he's gonna do if my screaming killed all of his eardrums. I am practically mute and half "paralyzed," it'd be a good idea to keep my mouth zipped. Alvin walked, with me in his hands, to the passenger door and opened the door with his foot. "What the heck?" I was astonished and fascinated. Alvin slowly and carefully put me down on the seat and helped me fasten my seat belt. When he was leaning over to lock the seat belt, I feel a little uncomfortable. I've never been this close to a guy before. At least not until now. He made sure that everything's done before going back to his seat. "Well, that was sweet." I thought in my head. Who would carry a person that they've only known for a day? Maybe he's just generous like that. But still...
I feel my legs warm up a little and now I could move my toes. My mouth also softened a bit. Alvin is back in his seat and he steps on the gas pedal.
"Why were you walking in weather like this? You should ride the bus or something." Alvin said.
"I don't ever take the bus because the closest school bus stops 15 minutes from my house. And did you just happen to pass by and saw me walking?" I asked curiously.
"I went to your house and waited for 10 minutes and you're still not coming out, so I left. This was the only road and I was just driving. I didn't know I would find you there. Miss Valentine, it's not safe walking in a weather like this. You should get least get a ride." Alvin explained. He went to my house? How dare he wait in front of my house? What if someone sees him?
"Though I didn't really like you coming to my house without my permission, I am glad that you passed by 'accidentally' and found me. I don't think I would have made it to school and I might freeze to death. Thank you. But promise me that you won't come to my house without asking me first, ok?" I am trying to cover the surprise and anger in my voice. I am a little upset with Alvin.
"Sorry, and I promise that in the future, I would ask you first before coming over to give you a ride. Would you forgive me for my impulsive act today, Miss Valentine?"
Alvin said in the most sincere voice. How could anyone resist that?
"Yes, just don't let it happen again." I said. "Umm.. Alvin, why do you keep calling me Miss Valentine? You could call me by my first name, you know." That has been going on for a while and I want to know the reason. It's not like he needed permission for this one.
"Well, the very first time I met you and you told me your name, the announcement came on. So I couldn't hear what you said. I was going to ask you about it, but you ran off. I thought I scared you." Alvin chuckled and so did I.
"No, you didn't scare me off. I just had to do something." For the entire time, I thought he was afraid to say my name. "It's Amelia by the way." I said. I see the right corner of his mouth lift up a little bit. What's so amusing?
"That's the perfect name for you. I am Alvin." I looked at him and it realized that it was a joke.
"Yeah, nice to meet you all over again." I said, awkwardly. We both burst into laughter. We talked and laughed some more until we reached school.

After school, I met Maggie at her locker. We hugged each other and I saw sadness across her face.
My eyebrows raised and asked, "What happened, Mag?" Whoever hurt my best friend, I am ready to chase after him. "Is it Jacob? What did he do to you?" I keep shooting questions at her.
"Whoa, Amel, calm down. It's not about Jacob. We are still madly in love with each other and he would never do anything to hurt me. It's just that, I can't go to the trip with you." Mag's voice cracked.
"What?!" I screamed. This is even worse than her and Jacob breaking up!
"Why? I signed up for it because of you and now you're telling me you're not going! What am I supposed to do?" I feel like crying too.
"I am sorry, it was so sudden. Ben is getting married and I have to go to his wedding." Maggie explained.
"You mean your cousin, Benjamin who lives in Australia?" This is unbelievable! Maggie nodded.
"And it so happen to be during the trip. What a coincidence! But you already paid for it!!"
"Please don't be mad. I could probably get a refund." Maggie gave me a tight hug. I sighed. Nobody is going to come with me now. I am going to be alone, by myself, on the other side of the hemisphere.
"Please, amel, amia, lia, mia..." Maggie just spilled all of my childhood nicknames. She always does that to get my forgiveness. "I'll help you pack!" Now that's something. I sighed again and finally said fine.
"Come to my place tomorrow afternoon." I informed Maggie. She nodded and smiled her sweetest smile. I had to forgive her. We walk toward the parking lot to Maggie's car and drove home.
I forgave two people in one day. That's way too much for me.
