The State of Utah is one of the western states of the United States. Salt Lake City is not only its capital, but also the largest city of Utah. The name "Utah" in Ute, the language of the Native Indians, means " people of the mountains". This state joined the Union on January 4, 1896. Utah has produced many renowned and famous people. A few of them are given below.

Famous People of Utah

John Moses Browning (1855-1926): He designed and developed automatic and semi-automatic guns. He also developed various types of firearms, cartridges and gun mechanisms. Many of the ammunition that was designed by him is still used around the world. John Browning is credited with one hundred and twenty-eight gun patents. The first patent was granted to him on 7 October, 1879.

Reva Beck Bosone (1895-1983): Reva Beck Bosone was the first women from Utah to be elected to the US Congress. By profession, she was a lawyer and became Salt Lake City judge, in the year 1936. Bosone was appointed as the chairman of Women's Army Corps Civilian Advisory Committee of the Ninth Service Command during the Second World War. She was elected as a Democrat representative from Utah and served in the Congress from 3 January, 1949 to 3 January, 1953. She was not re-elected; hence, resumed her law practice.

J. Willard Marriott (1900-1985): John Marriott was born at Marriott Settlement in Utah. His father was a farmer and he was raised in a farm where he was given ample responsibility at an early age. He is one of the most successful American entrepreneurs and founder of the Marriott Corporation, which is one of the world's largest chain of hotels and catering companies. His first venture was a small beer parlor in Washington, D.C. in the year 1927. Currently, Marriott Corporation has 1,400 restaurants, 143 hotels and resorts worldwide. He was a billionaire by the time he died.

Philo Farnsworth (1906-1971): Farnsworth was an American Inventor. He is famous for inventing the first-ever complete electronic television. Philo Farnsworth was the first person to invent the "Video Camera Tube". He has been credited with over three hundred US and foreign patents.

Robert LeRoy Parker (1866-1908): Robert Parker is also known as "Butch Cassidy". He was a famous outlaw, who was born in Beaver, Utah. Parker is famous for his notorious train and bank robberies. He was the leader of the "Hole in the Wall Gang". He was shot dead by the Bolivian police.

Wallace Stegner (1900-1993): Stegner was an American novelist, environmentalist and an American historian. He is often referred to as "The Dean of Western Writers". He was born in Iowa, but was brought up in Montana, Utah. His autobiography " Wolf Willow" is about his childhood life. Stegner's novel "Angel of Repose" won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1972. His famous non-fiction work includes "Beyond the Hundredth Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West". It is a biography of John Wesley Powell, who explored the Colorado River.
