Famous Graphic Designers

Any person who works within the graphics arts or graphic design industry cannot qualify as a graphic designer. A graphic designer is someone who actively creates a piece of design by bringing together images, motion graphics and typography. All the famous graphic designers of the world have been/are actively involved in the creation of some piece of design for different purposes.

The graphic designer needs to project information in such a way that it attracts attention and is easy to memorize. Some common examples of places where graphic designing comes in handy are illustrations, typesetting, web designs or user interfaces. The designers of today are very versatile and operate in many different mediums like print, publishing, and electronic media.

Most Famous Graphic Designers

David Carson
David Carson (September 8, 1952) is an American graphic designer who is very well-known all around the world. He rose to prominence in the 80s and the 90s, and became influential in the field of typeface designs. Carson opposed all conventions of the time and became widely popular as someone who did what he wanted, and achieved success at it. He is also known as the 'Father of Grunge', and has become synonymous with creating one's own signature with their designing work. He has won many awards in his time.

Giambattista Bodoni
Giambattista Bodoni (1740 - 1813) was an Italian graphic designer. He was also an engraver, typographer, publisher and printer and was very well-known in all the designing circles at the time. Today, he is most easily recognized by the well-known typeface (or font) 'Bodoni', which was his very creation.

Neville Brody
Neville Brody (April 23, 1957) is a British graphic designer, who became popular in the 80s for his work on numerous magazines and publications of the time. 'The Face' magazine and 'Arena' magazine is where he made his name as an Art Designer, and he used many novel publishing tools at the time and made them a part of mainstream culture. The famous Research Studios was created by him in 1994, and he is also a primary founding member of Fontworks. Along with David Carson, Brody is one of the most famous graphic designers of the 20th century and he is still very much a graphic designer in high demand.

Jonathan Ive
Jonathan Ive (February, 1967), an Englishman, is the principal designer behind the iMac, and is the Senior Vice-President of Industrial Design at the world famous Apple Inc. Though his work is less concerned with graphic designing per se and deals more with engineering and designing products, his work cannot be ignored in the area of contemporary creative designing. You may recognize his two most famous pieces of work - the iPod and the iPhone.

Milton Glaser
Milton Glaser (June 26, 1929) is an American graphic designer whose most famous piece of work is the 'I Love New York' logo which has become synonymous with American culture. He has also contributed to numerous campaigns, slogans, logos and marketing activities through the course of his illustrious career. In 1968 he also co-founded the extremely popular 'New York' magazine.

• Heather Montgomery - One of the most famous female graphic designers, she is the CEO of Forward Motion Studios. She designs couture jewelry, business cards and wine labels.
• William Morris - A 19th century poet, writer, textile designer and architect. He designed wallpapers and developed typefaces.
• Aldus Manutius - A 15th century publisher and printer whose most famous work is the 'Italic' text.
• Paul Rand - A 20th century designer who passed away in 1996. He was regarded as the master of graphics and advertising. His best known work was the designing and developing of brands like IBM, UPS and ABC.

All these designers have contributed to countless designs and graphics, and the world is a more colorful place because of them. Graphic designing involves a lot of creativity and ingenuity, and not everyone is cut out for it. But these individuals have all been pioneers in their own special ways.
