Family Home Evening Activities

On April 27, 1915, the then US President, Joseph Fielding Smith, issued a letter to all Latter Day Saints (LDS) churches to declare Mondays as Family Home Evenings. On such evenings, LDS churches were given a set time for prayers, hymns, family topics, and instruction on the gospel. This practice is observed till today.
Family Home Evening Activities
The church encourages family members to spend Monday evenings at home with the family. As a part of family home evening, all families are advised to study the gospel or enjoy gospel music together and do other wholesome activities that strengthen family relationships, create memories, and encourage the family to live righteously.

This is the perfect opportunity to tell your kids the story of God, and inculcate in them, some basic values like honesty and integrity through engaging parables. Teaching the gospel to kids is a challenging job. At such a tender age, kids don't understand the importance of Christianity and the Holy word. It is the responsibility of parents to teach them in an interesting manner. One way of doing this is by including Sunday school activities. Sunday schools have designed several games which are fun to play, and which help the kids to remember God's word and will. Bible coloring pages, Bible memory verses, Bible jigsaw puzzles, Bible books rapid fire, amazing verses and knock-knock jokes are some of the other games you can play with your kids. The list of games is endless, so if one gets boring, you can always switch over to another one. Singing praises and hymns together is another great way to help you and your family to learn the Bible. Carry on in this manner and sooner or later, the kids will be well-versed with the Bible.

There are various other fun family activities which are a source of great enjoyment and, at the same time, can teach your kids some essential life skills. Through plays and skits that involve the whole family, you can teach the kids how to cope with situations like blackout, earthquakes, tornadoes and cyclones. You can even teach them how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and how to treat chocking, shock and bleeding. Tell them of the importance of taking care of the environment and how they can do their bit by using water and electricity judiciously.

There are a number of cultural activities that can be done on a family home evening like arranging flowers, listening to and appreciating music, arts and crafts, learning and reciting poems, telling stories, drawing and painting, drama and dancing. You can also give them lessons on table manners and social etiquette. These activities will make your kids more creative and also boost their self-confidence.

Spending time with the family is always special. Even if you don't have the time or resources to plan a game or an activity, there are always simple things you can do. Watching movies while gorging on popcorn or french fries is always a treat. Cook a gourmet meal or try something that's not on your regular menu. Involve the family in the process. Play simple games like hide 'n' seek, who's the animal?, passing the parcel, or even musical chairs to liven up the evening. At times, just chatting is also interesting. Getting to know the thoughts and mentality of your family members, learning about their friends and interests can bring the family even closer.

Keep it fun and simple and make sure to involve every member of the family, no matter how young or old. In today's busy world, a family home evening is a chance for the whole family to just be together, and have some wholesome family fun. Make the most of this time with your loved ones.
