Bringing your pets with you to your new apartment home is a little more complicated than you think. Renters should be armed with the appropriate information so that they save money and time. In addition, when you exit your apartment home you should know what the apartments will look for when they assess damages.
As management companies look to squeeze more money out of each apartment unit, pet rent is a relatively new term that renters are becoming familiar with. We have put together a small list that renters should be familiar with when choosing to bring their pets to live with them at their next apartment home.
1) Your pet’s weight will be very important. Many apartment homes have weights limits that start around 25 pounds. Many apartment homes with carpeting or wood style floors may bar your dog from living on the premises. Unfortunately they may scratch the wood floors or stain the carpeting. If the community has concrete they most likely will accept large dogs up to 100 pounds. Make sure you call ahead before you tour apartments.
2) Your pets breed type will be the next item assessed. Aggressive breeds like Dobermans and German Shepherds will automatically be declined. Many times the apartment companies do not want to be responsible if your pet bites or injures another renter. You may want to lease from a private renter or possibly rent a house.
Once your pet has been approved to live in the apartment building, you will have to pay fees for your pet. A pet deposit will be mandatory at nearly every apartment. Do not confuse this will your own personal deposit for the apartment home. Be sure and ask your leasing agent what percentage of the deposit is refundable. Many apartments will return only half.
Pets may stain carpets and chew or scratch walls. Ask the leasing agent or apartment manager what the maintenance crew will assess and how they determine what portion of, ifany will be returned to you.
Apartments may shampoo your carpet to get the dog scent out of the apartment home. Many people are allergic to pets. If indeed they do, will this may come off your pet deposit.
If your pet urinates or has an accident on the carpeting you may be in trouble. Replacing a carpet costs hundreds of dollars.
Last but not least ask your leasing agent if they charge pet rents. This cost will be added to your monthly rent.
