Facebook Reunions
Facebook allows people to befriend high school classmates and relatives and share what is going on in their lives by updating their status. While many of these friendships exist in the ‘real world’ or ‘offline,’ many people have reunited on Facebook and communicate only on the social site. Facebook is the catalyst for some heartwarming reunions recently spotlighted in the media:
- In August 2009, The Early Show on CBS featured Jamie and Jeremy Clayton. Jamie wrote to Jeremy while he was in the Middle East during the Gulf War in 1990. The two lost touch but were later reunited when Jaime searched for Jamie and found him on Facebook. They are now married.
- On the Rachel Ray Show, a brother and sister who were separated 30 years ago talked about how they reunited on Facebook.
- A woman in Denver met her father for the first time after finding his wife on Facebook.
If you are thinking there is someone you would love to reconnect with and you want to see if they are on Facebook, you can find them in several ways:
- Simply type their name into the search box. If they have a common name, you may have to sift through several pages.
- You can find friends through networks. Add your high school, college or former employer to your profile. Click on the name and you will be taken to a page that lists Facebook users from your high school, college or work. You can scroll through and see if there are people you know.
- Some of the friends you are missing may know your other friends. You may be surprised with who you will find if you scroll through the friend’s list of your current friends.
Not all Facebook reunions are happy. A blog in a 2009 edition of Glamor Magazine talks about the awkwardness of a Facebook reunion between two junior high friends. In short, because they learned they had grown into different people over time and had little in common anymore. There are reports of marriages breaking up when old flames reunite on Facebook.
If you seek a reunion with an old friend, be prepared.
- If it has been many years since you have seen that person, they have changed and your relationship may not be the same.
- They may not want to be found and will reject your friend request.
- It could be a wonderful experience!!
