Eyes in the Rear View

Short horror.
My name's Bob Shiner and I've been driving this here tractor trailer for a little over ten years now. The out fit that I work for, operates out of Huston Texas. But delivers all over the states. They keep me pretty busy, running me back and forth from coast to coast, Ten months out of the year. It's ruff, but I don't mind so much. Hell, I love the money. I'd bet you think it gets pretty boring, making a living on the road. Well, sometimes it does... But sometimes, one night can make up for the whole year...

Let me explain...

Two years ago, I was delivering a shipment of medical supplies from Pittsburgh down to Atlanta.
I wanted to get it done fast so that I could spend the weekend with my, soon to be wife. So I decided to drive straight through the night, without stopping to sleep. Things were going just fine, but for some reason I kept getting this uneasy feeling. You know... The feeling you get when your being watched.

I tried to shake it off, but it just persisted. So I turned on the radio and cranked it up as loud as I could. I was able to shake the creeps for a time, but when I crossed the state line into Maryland the signal became too weak. I tried tweaking the dial, but there was just too much static. I said, "The hell with it," and just turned it off. It wasn't long after when that same feeling crept back into my head.

Just for piece of mind, I turned on the dome light and checked the cabin. I didn't see anything nor did I expect to. Like I said, just for piece of mind. With no signal on the radio and nothing to look at, but the white lines on an empty road, your mind tends to wonder. I began to imagine two yellow eyes peering out from behind me. I tried not to think about it, but I kept catching myself checking the rearview mirror to see if those eyes were really there.

Then I started wondering about the face that those eyes belonged to. Oh, if your mind's eye could have seen what mine did. It had long hackles of hair... It's complexion was yellow, with a fat stubby snout.

And its brownish, jagged teeth were wide enough apart for a pencil to fit between them. Its body was nothing but skin and bones as it sat hunched over on the bed inside the cabin. And its nails were as long as its thin, bony fingers...

I must have been dozing off when I dreamed that the thing leaned over and whispered in my ear, "BOO!" I snapped out of my daze just as two head lights came racing towards me. I quickly swerved back into my lane narrowly missing a head on collision with another tractor trailer. I don't know what a heart attack feels like but I swear I almost found out. I saw a rest stop up ahead and decided to break for a spell.

I pulled in and got myself a coffee and a cinnamon bun from the vending machines. It was a nice quiet night, so I figured I would sit at one of the benches and admire the stars while I drank my coffee.

I realized how lucky I was to have that little nightmare. A second later and I would have barreled head on with that other rig. I supposed I had my imagination to that for that.

After I finished my coffee I checked my watch and realized that I needed to make up for lost time.
I grabbed my cinnamon bun, intending to eat it later and headed back to my rig. I tossed the bun onto the seat next to me and pulled back onto the highway, feeling much more revived. I had only gotten a mile or two down the road, when I started to hear something coming from the cabin. I listened closely to try to make out what it was.

I had to chuckle, for it sounded like my old blood hound, Blue sniffing around the trash. But as I listened the sound came closer and closer, until it was right behind me. I don't know what I was thinking, but I was getting a little fed up with all of this. I grabbed the cinnamon bun and hollered back at whatever it was, "You want this, do ya?" I set it on the dashboard and continued, "Well, your just gonna have to come up here and get it!"

I knew I was pushing my luck, but I wasn't about to have icing and crumbs all over my cabin bed. I just had the sheets washed. There was a long spell of silence. I started entertaining the idea that this was all in my head again, until I began to feel something lurking around. I guess the thing couldn't hold out any longer, because then I heard it move from the cabin and sit down right next to me.

I turned to look, and was utterly shocked to find that the thing looked just as I had imagined it. It paid no mind to me as it slowly reached up for the pastry and quickly snatched it from the dashboard. I could sense his anticipation as he wrestled with the wrapper. He ripped it open and wolfed it down like he hadn't eaten for weeks.

Once he was finished he started fussing around with the radio. I guess he learned by watching me.
He was like a child or something, because when he would find a song that he liked he would clap his hands and try and imitate the melody. I know this sounds crazy, but I actually started to like the little guy's company. But as day break grew near, he started to get tired. He let out a yawn and stretched. Then he quietly crawled back into the cabin.

When day light came, I looked back to check on him, but he was nowhere to be found. I never saw him again, but I still think about him from time to time. Had he stuck around, I think he would have become like a son to me. Hell, I would have even took him fishing... Providing he didn't scare the fish away.

END...
