Exterminate Fruit Flies

Fruit flies are the small insects having a length of 3 mm. They have a yellowish brown colored body with brick red colored eyes. These can be easily recognized by their black strips running across the abdominal regions. Male flies are slightly shorter than the females and males have a comparatively darker body than the females. So, the obvious question that comes to our mind that even though these are such small creatures, is where do these insects come from and why do they hover around fruits? It is their sensory apparatus that helps to smell out the typical odors of fermentation. After they get attracted to the rotten fruits, they start breeding on them. Even though these insects seem so petite, they act as vectors for certain bacterial diseases. These can be commonly found in homes and restaurants, especially around garbage.

Ways to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

• Check the areas where you have kept the fruits and vegetables in the kitchen. Fruit flies grub around the wet and moist places, so it would be best to keep the fruits and veggies in a moist free place. By terminating the breeding grounds, it is impossible for the adult flies to breed and get nourishment and as a result, it will fly away from your home. Keep a fermenting fruit piece in a container and put a funnel above the mouth of the container. Once the flies get trapped into it, they will not be able to come out from the container.
• One of the easiest and cost-effective ways to exterminate them completely, is by preparing a mixture of milk, sugar and ground sugar. After you have prepared the mixture, boil it slowly in a low temperature for 5 - 10 minutes. Put the mixture in a dish and wait for your unwelcome guests to crawl into the mixture. They will die of suffocation.
• Fruit juices and apple cider vinegar are some of the natural ways to exterminate fruit fly. You can take a narrow necked bottle and pour a little amount of the apple cider vinegar or any decayed fruit juice into it, add few drops of dish soap to it. The odor of the cider vinegar or the rotten fruit juices will attract them, as a result they will get trapped inside the liquid.
• You can also use professional fly traps. These are made up of chemical substances or pheromones fused with ultraviolet bulbs. These professional traps come in different sizes and offer a varied choice to use in kitchens, homes and public places. The benefit of using ultra violet bulbs is to capture more number of flies. You can also use fruit fly traps. Capture the adult flies by attaching the trap to the inside lid of garbage bins. Discard the trap when it is covered with flies.
• Pyrethrin spray is used by most of the pest control operators as a quick tool to spray in the breeding areas. It is very effective in reducing their population. Using insect growth regulator like Gentrol Aerosol helps in killing the eggs. Apply this aerosol into the drains and dumpsters.
