Exploring your Homeschooling Options

There are many reasons why parents choose to home school their children. Every year hundreds of new families embark on the home schooling adventure. Maybe they do so for various reasons. But, most parents who home school do it as an alternative to public education. Because they do not feel that the public school system in their state provides a safe and quality education for their child. Parents choose to home school as a way to provide an individualized and quality education for their child.

The dynamics of the home school setting are like no other educational institution. The parent becomes the teacher, literally overnight. And, while home schooling offers more flexibility in scheduling and allows the child to learn at his or her own pace, the task of planning, organizing, and preparing a day’s lessons may be a challenge for some. Without the right support and plan of attack parents and children alike can quickly become frustrated and overwhelmed.

Never fear, there are a couple of important options that you should consider if you are going to home school your child for the first time. First and foremost, look for a parent support group in your local area. Join the group, not only for support, but also for the resources that experienced parents can provide. The will have developed their own list of do’s and don’ts, tips and tricks, and valuable contacts.

Next, consider how you will develop a plan of action, for educating your child. While it is all well and good to decide to home school, if you have no formal training; planning lessons and covering all the necessary concepts can be confusing, especially if you are starting from scratch. Consider finding an accredited home school curriculum that you can enhance and add to as a foundation for your child’s home school education.

There are many advantages in choosing an accredited home school curriculum. First, this type of program will generally cover the same curriculum that would be covered in a public school system. In addition, parents who choose to use an accredited home school program enjoy the advantage of having the accredited school keep record of their student’s progress. They can provide documentation and verification of the student’s learning in the event that it is needed.

In most cases, accredited home school programs are another source of support for parents who want nothing more than for their child to succeed. Depending on the program you choose, you may have the option to call teachers to receive clarification and support for lessons that may be unclear. Check out these options and the format of the accredited program you are interested in before signing up with them. Again, your parent support group may be able to provide recommendations for programs they use or are familiar with. In addition, you can also choose those home schools that provide extensive teacher support.

Home schooling can be very rewarding, but you must be prepared for the road ahead.
