Excessive Diarrhea in Children
Excessive diarrhea in children can give rise to severe health concerns. So, knowing about the symptoms and treatment of the condition may come in handy to avoid the situation from getting worse.

What Symptoms are Exhibited by Children With Severe Diarrhea?
Apart from loose, watery stools with increased frequency, accompanying symptoms which are indicative of diarrhea, include abdominal cramps and pain, fever, bloody stool and bloating. While these symptoms are common both for children and adults, there are some which may be specific for children only. Excessive diarrhea when accompanied by dehydration is a matter of concern, and if neglected can rapidly deteriorate an affected child's health. Symptoms which parents must watch out for include no wet diapers in three or more hours, fever over 39 °C, black or bloody stools, and increased irritability. Dry mouth, tearless cries, unusual sleepiness or drowsiness, areas of the abdomen, and eyes or cheeks appearing sunken, are the other symptoms. Also, try pinching the skin and release. If the skin does not flatten, then it may be certain sign of dehydration.
Treatment
A few lifestyle changes and home remedies are good enough to treat mild cases of diarrhea. However, when it comes to increased diarrhea in children, going for prescribed medications and recommendations of a doctor would be the safest option. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics if the condition is found to be caused by bacteria or parasites. However, if the cause is any viral infection, then there is no use of antibiotics. Also, parents would be advised to give their children with ample fluids such as juice, broth and water. But some children may not tolerate such foods. So most probably, they might be out on fluids through a vein in your arm (intravenously). The main aim of this treatment is to replace the dearth of fluids lost during the sickness.
Paying attention to some self-care measures at home helps in adding to the treatment of excessive diarrhea in children. Feed the child broths, juices and water. Apple and pear juices must be avoided. If the condition seems to improve, semi-solid foods like crackers, toast, eggs, rice, etc., and low-fiber foods could be given. Dairy products, fatty foods, are also not appropriate in diarrhea.
Although you have a fair idea about the symptoms, causes and treatments, consulting a doctor is the best option for dealing with a severe case of diarrhea when it comes to children. Parents may use a few home remedies in absence of immediate medical help. These include yogurt, carrots, rice, cereal, bananas, potatoes, and applesauce. A tablespoon of apple-cider vinegar given every hour is also a good remedy to harden the stools. Even tea made from blackberry and ginger root also helps. These remedies, although may not solve the problem but may reduce its symptoms and keep the condition from worsening further, until it is brought to medical attention.
