No matter the time of day, or where I am, I never truly stop thinking about that dreadful day. Like now for instance, I'm standing in the school parking lot with at least two dozen other people, and it's on my mind yet again. The ones gathered around me I like to consider my friends.

"Watch out!" This comes right before I am pounded in the head with a football. I turn around while touching the back of my head to see who threw the ball. Two guys, one from the wrestling team and the other the quarterback, come barreling toward me.

Eric, the quarterback who needless to say is the reason for our losing streak this season, is the first to speak. "Sorry, Bridge. I completely missed that."

"And I'm just so strong, I can't always control how far the ball goes." Devon. So arrogant and obnoxious, you can smell the stench of conceit from a mile away. He is rude to girls but most of the time is just makes them go crazy for him. He was caught last year for underage possession of alcohol at his place. His dad is a lawyer so he got off with one hour community service.

The bell rings and I tell them everything is OK. Mary grabs my arm before I can turn away and says, "You know guys, we're all heading out to Ruby Skye tonight if you want to come with." She has a thing for Eric so I guess this is a good opportunity for her.

"Who is we?" Eric asks.

"Does it matter, dude?" I guess with Eric comes Devon. Just the price you have to pay to make your friends happy.

"I guess you're right. We'll be there."

Mary smiles and before she can continue I pull her toward our first class. Mary is a close friend of mine. Besides Jane of course. Mary and I have been friends since about the second grade. She comes from a very wealthy side of town. Her mom is an interior designer and travels a lot. Her dad, well he keeps busy at the office while her mom is away. If you know what I mean. She has a closet bigger than my room and never wears the same thing twice. Her hair is dark to the point of almost black, and she has a body that most girls would die for.

Jane, on the other hand, is my neighbor. We met only a couple of years ago. Not many of our friends would be caught dead in out neighborhood. In fact aside from Jane and myself, none of our friends have been to my neighborhood. Jane and I don't have much money or very big houses. Her parents are happily married and Jane is very outgoing. She has the wild red hair to match her personality.

As Mary and I walk into first with Devon close behind since he has this class too, and are greeted by Jane almost knocking us down.

"Oh my word! I heard..."

"I am surprised you could hear anything with the amount of time you spend talking," says Mary.

"Not this morning guys. Let's all start the day off without the bickering because personally I'm sick of it." I hear Devon murmur an "Amen" behind me and I giggle. Jane and Mary are known for how much they can talk. About each other, over each other, really it doesn't matter what they talk about they just do.

The final bell rings and we all go to our assigned seats. Jane and Mary's seats are side by side, I bet the teacher regrets that move, in the front. Mine is on the other side of the room with Ben and Jack on either side of me and Devon seated in the seat in front of me.

"You're looking hot today Bridge. We still on for tonight, baby?' Jack has been hitting on me since freshman year at least.

"We both know I am not you're baby and yes. Mind Control is going to be there tonight so the place will probably be full."

"Yeah buddy!"

Devon passes me a note just as Mr. Cameron walks in. I open it and am amazed to find he has written that he can't wait for tonight but as I keep reading it says he can't wait for tonight so he can find a hot girl to take home. Now that's the Devon we all know.

The day passes slowly with two pop quizzes and a substitute that seems to not even know where he is. The three o'clock bell couldn't have come any sooner.

Mary pulls around in her white Ford Flex SE and Jane and I jump in. We always go to Mary's to get ready because she obviously has the most to choose from. Typically Mary takes us from school and then from where ever we end up, Jane and I take a bus home. Tonight we are planning to spend the might at her house.

When we arrive at Mary's, her dad's car is in the drive way along with another. We all walk up to the house and when the door opens I see a sight I never thought I would see. Mr. Gustavo is on the couch with his office assistant Mr. Daniels. They are in a lover's embrace and only break apart when we all drop our books and purses in horror.

Her dad jumps up and says he didn't realize the time. It is quiet for a while before Mary says, "I didn't realize you switched teams." She runs up the stairs with her dad yelling apologies at her. I follow behind her. Mary is on the floor with her scrapbook tearing out pages.

When she has pulled out every picture of her dad she stands up and says, "Well now that the show is over, how about we get ready for tonight?"

"Mary, we don't have to go tonight. It's ok to be upset in front of us. We're your friends." I know she has never really been one for sharing her feelings and I can't even begin to think of how she's feeling right now."

"Why in the world wouldn't we go? I've been looking forward to this night all week. Eric's going to be there and I'm going to have a good time." We all get up and head to the closet but while Mary isn't looking I gather the pictures from where she threw them in the trash and put them in my bag. She doesn't want them now but one day she might.
