Basically, the job of an esthetician can be regarded as a mixed profile of various other jobs in this field. This is the reason why the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a fact finding organization of US government, categorizes esthetician job under the job profile of barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers. They are the professionals having expertise in the services related to skin appearance of the clients.

The most important aspect of estheticians is that they are supposed to cleanse the skin and perform facial skin care. Besides these, various other types of skin treatments like waxing services or facial massage are also a part of their job. In addition to skin grooming, they are also expected to work in management of the saloons and maintain hygiene of the skin care clinics. Some estheticians who own skin clinic centers are involved in the managerial duties of hiring, supervising and guiding the workers at the skin health care centers. Some of the duties of estheticians include, performing non-medical skin procedures on the skin of the clients and help them improve the beauty and appearance. This job requires excellent communication skills with the clients and customers.

Duties of an Esthetician

• Punctuality is the most important attribute for them. They are expected to be on time, ready to serve the clients within the set time limits.
• They must be ready to work on flexible timings.
• Have knowledge about all the products and services of the spa/skin care center.
• Assist the staff and clients in work related to the spa/skin care center as requested by the management.
• Handle guests and look after their needs and concerns.

Educational Requirements
One must have completed a diploma and certification course in cosmetology or other related field of personality grooming to make a great career in this field. Nowadays, there are many vocational schools that offer these courses. The duration of these courses may be from six months to a year or two. Some schools offer these certification courses during evening, so that, people or students can learn these courses as per their comfort in the evening. Many estheticians work part-time in the salons and skin care units. They are generally taught basics of chemistry, anatomy and sciences related to the skin care. Since, some of them are also involved in selling the products of the skin care clinic, they are also taught basics of simple business and management skills.

As we can see, the job revolves around customers and clients, so it is important that they must be trained to deal with the impatient clients. Excellent communication skills are indeed necessary in this job. The salary range is usually between USD10,000 to USD60,000 and that depends on the amount of work experience one has in this industry.
