What if you were about to go on a long camping trip? What camping equipment would you take? Most people would think of essential items like food, clothes, pots, and pans. There is one thing that should not be forgotten. A pocket knife is very important to any serious camper.

A pocket knife is a knife easily stored, but with all the same abilities and uses as a utility knife. There are a multitude of different pocket knives available. If you go to any store that sells camping equipment, you most likely find a variety of pocket knives. Some are simply one knife that folds in on itself while others contain a variety of knives and other tools such as screw drivers, corkscrews, can openers, and even tweezers or toothpicks.

Sometimes you don’t plan on needing a pocket knife because it seems like they only come in handy for those odd jobs. For example, most people wouldn’t imagine getting lost or stranded on a camping trip, but it can happen. If it were to happen, a pocket knife would be your savior. It could be used to cut rope or twigs to create shelter. It could be used to kill animals for food. It could also be used as tweezers if you suffered a stab wound or were bitten by a tick.

Here are also different kinds of storage techniques for pocket knives. This is an important thing to consider when buying a knife. As mentioned before, most fold in on itself for easy portability. However a person can also buy cases that can go in your pocket, attach to a belt, or connect to a camping bag or kit. One should consider what is most convenient for them before investing in a pocket knife.

It’s also important to understand how to use a pocket knife. Basic skills can be found in books, articles, and videos. For example, when carving a piece of wood or cutting a piece of rope, always cut in a direction away from your body. Serious injury could occur if you pull a blade towards yourself.

Also, never push a knife into something on its point unless the knife has a locking mechanism to prevent the blade from closing on your hand. This is a very serious precaution to keep in mind since it is one of the leading causes of injury when using pocket knives. This leads to another point of who should be handling a knife.

If you are camping with your family, make sure that everyone knows how to properly use a pocket knife. That is, make sure everyone in the party you are with knows to the essential safety precautions that should be taken when using a knife. It’s also important to keep the knife away from small children. If you wouldn’t let a child hold a kitchen knife, then don’t let them hold a pocket knife either.
