Entwined Together
Serene Cutler and Grayer Lancaster are forced together by their cruel fathers. Power, money, threats and authority is all Mr. Cutler and Mr. Lancaster can think about. But when Serene and Grayer are pushed together no one knows what could happen.
Father waved the unopened envelope in my face as if it were a card from the president, which I know it isn’t. He ripped it open quickly; his brown eyes scanned the letter quickly and expectantly. With a smile he flicked his brown eyes towards me with a glint in them.
"We’ve just received wonderful news Serene." His tan hands gripped the envelope tightly as he spoke; as if it would fly away.
I don’t say anything, I’m cautious and careful. When father gets this excited it’s usually because he’s gotten something he longed for, which was almost always a bad thing.
He frowned at my quietness, he expects me to grovel at his feet for this ‘wonderful’ news, I won’t.
"You’ve been accepted into Chester Private Boarding School for the privileged." And?? Am I supposed to be thrilled to go to an overpriced school for the rich and talented?
He stared at me; he probably couldn’t fathom why I’m not excited.
"Is that all?" I’m beginning to get bored; I do not care for what school I attend. I started to walk out of his study; this could have waited until morning.
"Serene Elizabeth Cutler get back here, this instant!" He furiously yelled at me.
I turned to him with a groan, I’m tired from being awoken from my peaceful slumber in the middle of the night.
"Yes father?"
He smiled, he loves to flaunt his authority.
Father reached into the envelope and pulled out a ring. From where I stood it looked beautiful. Plain silver band with a large diamond stacked on top of two smaller ones, not too flashy but not too plain.
I raised my dark brow at him, what’s the point in showing be a wedding band. "Yes father it’s beautiful but I fail to see the reason you’re showing it to me?"
He put his head down as he shook it from side to side. "Sometimes you are so foolish Serene. I’m showing it to you because you’re to be engaged.
What!? I couldn’t have possibly heard him right, engaged? I don’t remember ever making a promise to be someone’s fiance.
"I’m sorry father but I can’t recall ever telling a gentleman that I would marry him." "Because I did, but first we had to make sure that the two of you would be accepted into the school."
I gasped! Father and I didn’t really get along since my mother passed but I never thought he’d be cruel enough to marry me to the first rich man to ask. I mean it’s the 21st century for crying out loud.
"And don’t I get a say in any of this?"
"If you don’t want to sleep on the streets with not even a penny to your name you will marry."
I could live poor but to have nothing would be difficult, how would I even get a job without another change of clothes. And I’ll starve of course; I’m not eating out of a trash can! I have to be reasonable about this and pray that the man isn’t some horrid pervert.
I narrowed my eyes at my father’s smug grin.
"You are cruel father, forcing your only child to marry but I have no other choice, I’ll marry."
He handed me the ring, it had looked beautiful earlier but now I detested the ugly thing. How could something so small and of little importance cause pain and sorrow?
"Goodnight Serene." Father said as he passed by me, only stopping to kiss the top of my head.
"Goodnight father." I muttered after he left the study.
I looked down at the ring again and sighed, maybe this is a dream and in the morning I’ll wake up and not remember a thing.
I shook my head as I crawled back into my bed, this isn’t a dream and the morning will probably be worse.
