Entwined Together - Chapter 2
Serene meets her betrothed! He seems kind and he's definitely sexy but every beautiful rose has a deadly thorns!
I awoke to the buzzing of my alarm clock, I blindly throw my arm over and shut the annoying thing off. As I sit up and rub the sleep out of my eyes, the events from last night come rushing back to me, so it wasn't a dream.
Knock! Knock!
After only two knocks my father comes in, he's smiling and already dressed.
"I need you to be dressed and ready to go in 30 minutes." He says as he motions to my walk in closet.
"And why is that?"
He smile falters, "Do not question my authority young lady!"
I should have just stayed quiet, "No father, I just simply want to know where we're going, that's all."
He eyes me suspiciously, I can't fathom why? What I had said was indeed the truth.
I get out of bed knowing that he probably won't tell me, he never does.
Father walks over to the door, "We're going to meet your betrothed and his family." He closed the door behind him as I froze.
Going to meet the man I'm supposed to marry and his family? My stomach felt like I had swallowed acid.
Digging around in my closet I found a decent yellow and white sun dress, since it is the end of summer the dress should be a great choice. Stripping my nightgown off, I throw the dress on over and put on my white wedge heels to go with it. I brush my dark curls and decide to leave them down and go natural without any makeup.
I walk down the stairs to see father sitting down on the leather couch.
"You look very lovely Serene."
I narrowed my eyes at him, he just has to rub salt into my wound. I get in the back seat of his car, I don't want to be near him at all. Father doesn't play the radio or talk as we drive into town, making the atmosphere awkward and silent.
We live in a two-story house in a very well protected gated community, we have our own police and fire department. All the houses are huge and nicely decorated, the lawns well-trimmed and clean. Father loves the gated community, I don't, maybe its due to the fact I don't have a single friend. The town around us is also very nice but its like a rich town, everything is top dollar and in the latest fashion. You won't be able to find a McDonald's or Burger King for miles, I don't think I've ever seen a Wal-Mart. Majority of the people here are snobby and cruel and if you wear something that was 'last season' you won't have a single person talk to you. My life is very 'sheltered' as my father would say.
Father parks at 'The Pierre', a nice little french restaurant, it's actually my favorite restaurant. I look at father in shock, I'm surprised he knows this.
Father looks away shyly, "I remember you liked to play with the ducks when you were younger."
Despite my anger towards him I smile.
We walk up the steps together, he holds the door open for me as I walk through.
"Just you two today?" The waitress asks as she gathers menus.
"We need a table that can fit six." Father corrects as he looks out the door, probably trying to see if he sees his future son-in-law, I shudder at the thought.
"Follow me please," the waitress says as she picks up four more menus.
I don't follow, instead I go out the sliding doors that leads to a small garden with a pond and ducks. The ducks quack as I approach them and scatter into the pond. I laugh, they're so adorable.
"You have a very lovely laugh." A deep sweet voice says.
I turn around to reply but my voice catches in my throat, the boy standing in front of me is painfully beautiful. Tousled light blonde curls sway in the light breeze. I have to bend my head back lightly to look into his startling green eyes, he takes his tan hand and runs it through his curls. God I love curls.
He gives me a sexy smile when I don't answer, I flush slightly embarrassed.
"Thank you," I twirl a curl behind my left ear.
He comes beside me and crouches down to pet one of the ducks that swam over to us. The duck is black compared to all the yellow ducks and it seems to have patches of fur missing.
"Poor little guy," I say as I crouch down beside him, my long ivory fingers stretch out to pet the black ducks head.
"You know I never caught your name?"
I smile, "That's because I never said it."
His smile widens, I'm guessing he's not used to people answering him that way.
"Well I'm Grayer Lancaster." He says as he extends his tan hand out to me.
I shake his hand, his long slim fingers grab my small hand lightly, "Serene Cutler."
"Serene, come along darling, they've arrived," father shouts from the sliding door.
I sigh, father just has to ruin everything. I was happy for a little while, forgetting that I'm being forced to marry. My smile falls completely, now I have to face the music, kiss my short slightly happy life bye.
When I get up I look at Grayer, the last person I flirted with before I meet my betrothed, I'm happy its someone as handsome as him.
"Everything alright, Serene?" Grayer asked with a concerned face.
Mustering a small smile I reply, "No, not at all."
I walk over to father as slowly as I could, I know I have to face facts but at least I can slow the process. I follow him to a table, the people are already seated and as I look them over I smile slightly, they look quite nice.
The woman has ash blonde hair that's cut into a bob with hazel eyes, she's petite and wearing high-waisted pants with a light pink blouse. She smiles at me in a sweet way, like I'm a friend she's meeting for tea.
The man has chestnut-brown hair that curls slightly at the end, not quite falling into his green eyes. He's tall and tan with beige pants and a red polo shirt. He gives me a curt nod, he seems a little unpleasant.
There's a boy with them too, he looks about 13 or 14. He's the spitting image of his father, the same curling chestnut-brown hair and green eyes, he only has his mother's petite body. He's wearing Denim pants with a dark blue sweater, he just looks at me.
"This is my lovely daughter Serene," father says proudly.
What have I done to be proud of? I mean I'm smart and good but have I really done anything that makes you want to brag about? No.
"She's beautiful Benedict." The woman says.
"Thank you ma'am."
I may not want to be in this situation but I do have manners.
"And well-mannered," the man puts in.
"Thank you sir."
"Thank you Maya and John." Father says politely.
The boy rolls his eyes and leans forward, "She's not a dog entering a show to be praised."
I fight the urge to laugh but instead smile at him, he's adorable.
"Leighton," his mother and father shout at the same time, they looked appalled.
"Is Leighton causing trouble again?" Someone asks with a chuckle.
Wait! No! It couldn't be!
I turn around hesitantly knowing that it was him before I saw his face.
"Grayer!"
"Serene!"
Knock! Knock!
