England Planning to Legalize Assisted Dying

England and Wales are considering the legalization of assisted dying in the State. A law is under process that will ensure that eligible individuals get assistance to end their life. Read on for full story.
Some call it assisted dying, some say euthanasia or more famously known as mercy killing. There are many such organizations around the world which strive for people who want rights to end their life on their terms. One such organization is Dignity in Dying. According to the report submitted by British Medical Journal(BMJ), a 12-member commission is formed for this project. The Dignity in Dying was behind the idea of such commission. The commission will perform a detailed study on such cases where people want to willing end their life and probably submit a report by end of the next year.

The head of the commission, former Lord Chancellor Charles Falconer has assured the media that, despite the money that was raised by Dignity in Dying, the decision of the members will be made without any influence. As of now, there is no such law in England, in fact it is illegal for doctors to assist terminally ill people in dying.

The Difference:
The report clearly differentiates between assisted dying and euthanasia, Euthanasia is a case where the life-ending medicine is prescribed by the doctor and also administered by him or some third-party who may take the responsibility, whereas assisted dying includes the doctor prescribing a life ending medicine, but the administration part is to be carried out by the patient itself for which he/she might get assistance.

World Statistics:
Switzerland is the country where assisted dying is legalized. But Switzerland was not the first. The State of Oregon in the U.S. was the place where assisted dying was first practiced in 1997. The Act under which assisted dying is practiced is called the "Oregon's Dying with Dignity Act 1994". According to reports, there have been 460 such cases in Oregon where people have committed suicide by taking advantage of the Act between 1998 and 2009 legally.
