Engagement Rings - Shopping for the perfect engagement ring

Engagement rings are an expensive purchase and it is no surprise that most people take time to really consider their best options when buying engagement rings. It is, after all, something we only intend to do once. This is going to be something worn for the rest of a woman’s life and it is important to make the right choice. No pressure! There are, however, some very simple guidelines to making the whole experience a little easier.

First of all, let us consider the size of the engagement rings. Before any purchase is made, you will have to notify the jeweller of what ring size you require. There are a few different ways of finding out. First of all, is it a surprise? If so, try to find a ring that your girlfriend wears on the third finger. This can then either be taken to a jeweller, or you can accurately measure the diameter of the ring and look up the size on a chart ( see one of our links at the end of the article.) Another way is to put the ring on your finger and mark the position on your finger where the ring comes to, with a line. You can then use a ring sizer to find the correct size. It is possible to get hold of a small reusable sizer, sent in the post. Some companies send them out by post for enquiries.

Next, the ring itself. Let us begin with describing the parts of engagement rings. First of all you have the setting. This is the part where the stone(s) are held. This can be done by use of claws or pegs, or by a channel that the stones or set into, or even by a bezel or collet, where the edges are rubbed over the centre of the stone. Next we have the part that goes around the finger. This we call a ring shank. Engagement rings also have a distinct shape where this joins to the setting. We call these shoulders. All of these parts can differ and together they make up the style of engagement rings. The ring before any stones are set into it is what we refer to as the ring mount.

To get the right style, think about what style of jewellery she normally wears. Would you be better looking for simple engagement rings, or does she like more detailed designs, which would steer you towards intricate engagement rings. Think also how the ring will age, in terms of design. A contemporary look is fantastic, but may be something that combines this in a classic design. For example a modern solitaire with four claws, with narrowing shoulders. Simple, contemporary but classic. Engagement rings of this type will look timeless. If you wish to add more detail, then why not look at engagement rings with diamond set shoulders? The focus is still on the central diamond, but with that little bit more detail.

There are many engagement rings now available which lift the setting slightly away from the finger allowing a wedding ring to fit perfectly flush alongside it. Are some types of diamond cheaper than others? Yes, I know budget is very important and getting the right diamond is crucial when considering engagement rings. I would advise buying a diamond that is a minimum of H/I colour and SI2 clarity if you want a white diamond with no visible marks. The whiter the stone and the better the clarity, the more money you will pay. This cost also increases with diamond size. Generally some fancy shapes are a little cheaper than rounds, such as princess cut diamonds. If your heart is set on the whiteness of platinum engagement rings, but they are too costly, why not consider 18ct white gold which will be around half the price for the actual ring mount.

When you have an idea of what you like, take advantage of the expertise that is available out there. I have been sorting diamonds for over a decade and love to advise on diamond jewellery. You might want a larger diamond that is slightly tinted in colour, or you might want a smaller stone which is very white and high on the clarity scale. Anything is possible.

There are many guidelines for how much to spend on engagement rings, some people advise one or two month’s salary. I feel this is a very personal matter and it is down to the individual to decide what they can best afford. There are always going to be people advising you spend ‘more!’ Set yourself a budget, but be realistic about what to expect for this money. Consider buying online.
