Enemies or Lovers? Pt. 27
Here is another... has some important information about Sarah's parents.
"For your sake, and mine, I hope that's the truth. You're the best agent this company has and if there is something wrong and you don't tell me so I can help fix it; then it's both our heads." What?
"What do you mean by that? This is your company right? Why would your ass be on the line as well?"
"There are bigger people in this than you think. This isn't just me anymore, it never really was, but you didn't need to know about that until you were assigned bigger targets, such as Carson Marciano." Maybe I won't be able to get out of the business, no I have to. I can't do this anymore, this was never what I wanted to become.
"Why is Carson Marciano such a big deal?" I don't get why everyone wants him dead. Zane looked at me, probably having an internal battle deciding if I can be trusted with the truth.
"You should take a seat." Crap. This is going to be a long one or a really hard one to understand.
"For three centuries, your family has been involved in this company; namely assassins, but other jobs as well." 300 years, what the hell? "We've never had a problem with your family that is until your mother fell in love with a vampire."
"What?" How?
"She was given a target to eliminate. At the time she wasn't quite as good as you, but she came close. Anyway she was the best we had at the time. She, like you, would only take a week or so, but with this target; it took quite a considerably longer amount of time, about three weeks to be exact. My father, who sat in this chair when your mother was here, called her in to talk just like I did with you, which makes me think that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I am hoping I'm wrong, but I haven't ruled it out yet. Anyway, she got involved with the target and eventually fell in love with him.
A couple of weeks later she came to my father and told him that she wanted out; we both know that for an agent to get out, they won't be alive; although that rule has been in place for centuries, she knew he wouldn't have the heart to hunt her down and eliminate her. She told him that all she needed was a few hours to get what she needed and get out of the country. He granted her wish and my father never heard from her again; at least that's my knowledge. Five years later, she moved back, for reasons unknown to me. She moved into town with her five-year old daughter, yet her lover was not with her.
We have reason to believe that he was murdered by a vampire hunter that was after them both. A year later she was seen with a man who she married and had a son two years later. Your mother and her husband then began to meddle with things that shouldn't have been meddled in and got themselves murdered, along with their son; we don't know why the murderers didn't kill you though. I've been working on this case since my father left; there are still clues that haven't been uncovered yet. Carson was involved with the things that your mother and her husband had been meddling with, I don't know how, but I will find out." That was the longest story of my life, considering it is my life.
"So, my father was a vampire, and the guy who I thought was my father was actually my step dad, which would then make my brother, actually my step-brother?"
"Yes."
"And why did I think that he was my father when I clearly should remember that he isn't?"
"My father and I had been working on that before he died. We found traces of Wicca in your family history, on your mother's side. We thought she was a Witch herself and did something to your memory to keep you from your father." Why would she do something like that? I think I have a right to know who my father is.
"If she was a Witch, then why didn't she protect herself and dad - well my step dad?"
"I have no idea. Maybe she did and she got distracted. There are so many possibilities for that question."
"Why would you want me to kill Carson when you don't even know if their murders were done by him, we could still get information from him?" He had a look on his face, right then I knew I wasn't going to like his answer.
"I knew Jason was coming after him. I also knew how you would handle the situation. Just as you said you did and you are going to keep doing what you're doing until further notice."
"What about the client?"
"I will take care of her."
"Oh my God, I'm half-vampire and part Witch." I was in complete shock.
"Yes you are, you are also dismissed." That's it? He has nothing else to say to me?
"That's it?"
"Well, I think that's a lot to handle for one day, don't you? Oh, and I've taken care of your absences from both work and college." With that his phone went off and he picked it up. He looked at the Caller Id and answered. I got up to leave and I heard the other person on the other side of the conversation. She sounded familiar, very familiar, but I can't quite place it.
"What do you want, sis?" Zane said it like he was annoyed.
"Yes. Why?" I wish I could hear the other side of the conversation. I have an odd feeling that it's about me, and that his sister is someone I know. I shut the door after me. I walked down the never-ending hallways in this building before I got out.
I just want to go to bed. When did I get so tired all of a sudden; except, it isn't all of a sudden. I've been tired for weeks. I have got to start eating better. I drove home, hoping to eat something and go to bed. Thank God Zane takes care of college and work for me. I don't really need those things; it's just for a cover. I get all the money I need from this job, although now that I'm planning on getting out I should start going to classes and work. I sound like a corny spy movie; it's a good thing I don't care.
I got to the parking lot and sighed. I was home. I wonder if Carson will be there, I hope so. I love it when he sleeps with me, I feel so safe with him there. I opened the front door and set everything down on the chair in the living room. I checked the kitchen and got a banana and piece of bread and a glass of water. I took a couple of bites and figured that the bread and banana aren't what I wanted. I gulped down the water like I had been denied for weeks. I got another full glass of water and ice then I went to my bedroom.
Carson was on the bed, reading some old leather book. I felt a mild curiosity fill my stomach, but I quickly diminished it. He looked up at me when I entered and a warm smile tugged at his lips. Instinctively, my lips were pulled into a mirror image of his. He closed the book and set it down then got up to come to me. My eyes were drooping because I was too tired to keep them open. My limbs were getting tired as well and I felt my fingers go numb, then heard the distinct sound of glass shattering. My eyes flew open as I looked down upon the melting ice and water that was now pulling at my feet around the broken shards of glass. The next thing I know was the feeling of Carson's hands around me as darkness took over.
"What do you mean by that? This is your company right? Why would your ass be on the line as well?"
"There are bigger people in this than you think.
