Enema Instructions
Enema is often given as a remedy for relieving constipation or it may be used in colon wash. Here are some enema instructions you should follow to achieve best results.

Types of Home Enema
Mostly, natural liquids are introduced in the body in the enema treatment. Also, some lubricating fluids are injected prior to the enema to relax the rectum and colon. Coconut oil and olive oil are some popular lubricating fluids. However, avoid using alcohol or drugs as enema fluids as they can cause aggravated effect and may even cause death. Some example of home enema are as follows:
- Coffee enema
- Yogurt enema
- Lemon juice enema
- Garlic Epsom salt enema
- Salt water enema
- Glycerin and mineral oil enema
- Vinegar enema
- Aloe vera enema
If you wish to administer enema on yourself or someone else, then firstly you'll have to gather supplies. These include an enema bag, appropriate solution, nozzle, tube with clamps etc. When you have all the supplies at hand, proceed as per the instructions given below.
- Sterilize the enema set with a good quality disinfectant or bleach. If you are using a bleach, do not forget to rinse it thoroughly to remove any traces of bleach. Use a new enema bag every time and avoid using someone else's bag under all circumstances.
- Attach the bottom nozzle of the enema bag to one end of the tube in order to fix it.
- Fill the bag with any enema solution of your choice by closing the clamp. It is wise to seek your physician's opinion regarding the type and temperature of the solution used in a colon cleansing enema.
- Open the clamp and let the solution run through the tube in order to prevent any air inside. Once the tube is filled, close the clamp immediately. This should alleviate the possibility of excess cramping due to air entering the body.
- Next, place the bag at an appropriate height, preferably 1 ft or more from your anus.
- Lubricate the nozzle with any lubricating fluid of your choice. There is no harm in using commercially available lubricants.
- Then, lie down in your most comfortable position with your knees drawn to your chest. You can lie on either side or you may even choose to lie on your back. Alternatively, you may even sit on the toilet seat. However, this may not be the most comfortable option.
- The last step is to insert the nozzle and release the clamp, so that the fluid flows inside the rectum and then to the colon.
- If you experience severe cramping, try lowering the position of the bag, as it may facilitate the release of the gas.
- It is important to retain enema for at least 2 minutes, before expelling it. You may repeat the procedure if you want even better results.
