Ending a Long-Term Relationship
Ending a long-term relationship is not that easy. It can be painful and troublesome for both the partners. However, you can end up your relations in a smooth manner so that both of you can withstand it.
Reasons for Ending a Long-Term Relationship
A long-term relationship is quite important for every person as it offers physical and emotional support. But there are certain situations that one or both partners come to the decision to end the relationship. There are a number of reasons for ending a long-term relationship such as lack of communication, not spending time with each other, financial issues, infidelity, aggressiveness of one or both partners, etc. Many couples, after living together for a long time, realize that they are not compatible for each other. When the tolerance levels are surpassed, the couple starts to think about ending the relations. If both the partners choose a peaceful way while ending the relationship, then it would be comfortable and less painful for both.
How to End a Long-Term Relationship?
Before taking a final decision, make sure that you really want to break the relationship. Just confirm that you are not taking any decision in a hurry or out of irritation. Your partner may start to plead and make promises. Despite his/her pleading, if you are firm about your decision, then try to find out some smooth ways to end your long-term relationship. Here are some useful tips for ending a long-term relationship:
- An open communication is very important while ending the relationship. Decide an appropriate place for the open discussions. Explain the reason why you wish to end up the relationship with your partner. It is not fair to leave your partner without letting him/her know the exact reason. Let him/her know what had gone wrong. Avoid adding bitterness in your relationship while ending it.
- Tell him/her clearly about your priorities and expectations. Explain your partner how you have realized that you are not compatible for each other. Clearly tell him/her that it’s time for you to move on to a new phase. You can explain all this in a good manner without hurting him/her.
- Never make your partner feel guilty for this situation. Admit that both are responsible for it. If possible, say ‘Sorry’ to your partner.
- Don’t just go on blaming your partner for what has happened. Listen to your partner also. Even though you have taken the decision of ending the relationship, give him/her a chance to express his/her feelings. Don’t get angry at anything your partner says. You may come to know about your mistakes from his/her speech. Self-assessment will help you improve yourself, which could be useful in your future relationships.
- Even if your relationship is over, you can remain good friends and share your feelings. Discuss about this possibility. Since you both have been in a long-term relationship, it is obvious that there is a strong emotional connection between you. As you can understand each other very well, you can help each other in any problem as a friend. Promise your partner that you are always there to help him/her in any disaster.
- Once you take the final decision of ending the relationship, stick to it. Many couples once decide to end the relation and the next minute they wish to not to do that. This instability of mind is not good for both of you.
