Anytime you switch on the television for news, chances are you are going to view some religious fanatic trying to prove that the world is going to end. Even Hollywood doesn't seem to be behind. Movies like 2012, Independence Day, Knowing and so many others depicted the doomsday. Time and again these predictions have proved wrong but still these prophets continue to dominate the mentality of the public. The recent news which caught our attention was the judgment day will start from May 21, 2012 as predicted by the most famous American preacher David Camping. He also announced on his Family Radio that New Zealand will be the first one to face the wrath with series of earthquakes.
As critics ridicule this theory many believe that Mr. David Camping is going to be wrong again. This religious broadcaster has already predicted the end of the world three times in the past. Scientists and other experts feel that this religious preacher's numerical calculations are mostly wrong. Whenever these predictions have proved wrong these fanatics have come with a theory to justify their prophecy. These prophecies are calculated on the basis of numerology which of course is not an exact science which proves that fallacies are bound to surface. Still with all these messiahs having a poor record some vulnerable people easily believe them and spend their lifetime savings in generating false awareness.
According to a news agency David Camping's followers spent around $3 million in order to spread this message. This proves that these forecasts not only waste resources but also spell doom for the public. Here are the current popular lists of the so-called predictions which went wrong:
Predictions that Proved Wrong
| 1843, William Miller |
- A farmer by profession, Miller studied the bible for many years and derived a date when the world would end. He and his followers spread the message that the God is going to destroy the world between 21st March 1843 to 21st March 1844.
- He actually created false rumors which made many people sell their property and join his band. Time passed on and nothing happened and people then left the band after Miller's death in 1849.

| 1954, The Keech Prophecy |
- Marion Keech, a housewife in Chicago claimed that our Earth would be visited by aliens from planet Clarion who would destroy us by bringing floods. The prophet then claimed that only she could save the people from this mass destruction if they became her followers.
- Though many people became her followers, few psychologists sneaked into the group and made investigations about the said date. On the doom date nothing happened and Mrs. Keech proclaimed that she had saved the world from destruction.

| 1982, Pat Robertson |
- He is the most famous person who has openly denounced Hinduism as "Demonic" and Islam as "Satanic". He also condemned gay marriages, abortion and feminism. He had claimed that the world would end in 1982 which failed.
- According to him the 9/11 attacks were done with the help of gays, lesbians, abortionists and feminists. This created a lot of furor among the community where he was asked by the President of United States to apologize.
- But again when Hurricane Katrina followed, he implied that this was God's punishment to America. Even though his predictions about judgment day failed every time, he never fails to create controversy, till now.
|
| 1997, Heaven's Gate |
- Prior to starting an American UFO cult, Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles believed that they were directly related to Jesus Christ. Both formed variety of groups under different names in order to make people believe about New Age Faiths which combined the concepts of Christianity and science fiction.
- The group was also made to believe that God was going to destruct the world and the only way to live is to kill oneself. On March 26, 1997, 39 followers of this group committed mass suicides thinking that with comet Hale-Bopp an alien aircraft was going to deliver them to a New Level.
|
| 2000, The Millennium Bug |
- Even though 2000 was welcomed by all of us as a start of a new millennium it also added to our woes. Many people were afraid that the computer would fail to work bringing blackouts and widespread destruction. Some people started piling up food, water and guns for survival. But with few minor problems like some slot machines shutting down, our computers worked well and again this prediction failed.
- As if this computer glitch was not enough, another messiah Richard Noone predicted in his book "5/5/2000:The Ultimate Ice Disaster" that the world would be covered by snow because the planets would align and the Antarctic mass would melt. Eventually we were saved from this tragedy as this prediction was false.
|
| 2011 and 2012 Doomsday Arrival |
- Another prediction which made headlines in newspapers is return of Jewish Christ which will help the messianic Jews in clearing Palestinians from Israel and achieve their Fertile Crescent. These Messianic Jews believe that the Earth will flood on either May or December 2011.
- Another forecast believes that the world runs according to the Mayan calendar and the days allotted to us are actually coming to an end. Therefore some believers feel that the end is going to come with aliens rampaging our Earth and some astronomers feel that the planets might crash into our world.

One thing to notice is that these predictions will never make sense but yes they will be successful in creating fear only if we let them. We have advanced in every field but why can't we still get rid of these superstitions. Now is the time to shed our superstitions or else these false predictions will disrupt our normal lives. One essential thing to be remembered is that future cannot be predicted by anyone. There is no such holy book which teaches hatred among mankind as some of these preachers preach. On the contrary, these books teach us to live in harmony.
