Emergency Tips for Water Damage from Contaminated Water

Sweage and Septic Leaks can change the safety of a home. This is a very quick look at the "dos" and "don'ts" of how to handle this situation before professionals show up to correct the situation.
We all hope we never have to deal with sewage in our home. However, sewage line back ups can happen. Here are some very simple steps to follow in case of this style of emergency:

Do:
  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.
Do Not:
  • Spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas.
  • Turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Use household fans to dry the structure and spread contaminants.
  • Use products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.
Do take note that OSHA recommends a post-exposure medical evaluation if you are ever exposed to harmful waste. Consult your local health department or physician for instructions on how to have this evaluation done properly.

The Center for Disease Control of the United States has issued many helpful articles on the topic of Hazardous waste. Sewage and Septic leaks can result in what’s known as Hazardous Household Waste.
