Email List Management: Are You Growing Too Fast?

Are your email lists getting out of hand. Here are some tips that will help you keep them at manageable levels.
If you’ve followed the initial steps of setting up an email database and the rules for email introduction and growth, you might have a problem on your hands pretty quickly. Without proper list management things might get difficult to maintain.

It’s easy to amass a collection of email addresses, if you have taken the appropriate steps to effectively build your contacts. But when does too much become a problem? Sometimes, a database filled with thousands of names and addresses can be filled with faulty contacts and or contacts that need to be removed because they have requested to be taken off the list. It’s important to keep the database up to date and accurate. When the database has grown to this extent, list management software might be of use.

List management software will keep your database up to date and it will delete unsubscribe requests; it will update changes of addresses or preferences. It will take care of many of these mundane details that can really pile up when you are dealing with thousands and thousands of contacts.

Many times databases grow with incorrect data and there might be double entries for the same user. This will result in a person getting your emails twice as many time as they should, which can really turn them off and possibly force them to get off your list. List management software will automatically eliminate these duplicate entries and save you the trouble of going through all the contacts yourself.

Finally, if your list is growing at an exponential rate that seems overwhelming, it might be good to take a second to examine why. Is it because you are offering generic give-aways that may attract many clients who are not necessarily interested in your company’s services? In that case, it may be better to target more specific audiences – not just anyone who may want to get a free iPod or any other kind of offer you might be throwing at them.

While it is good to grow and expand your lists to reach a wide horizon, try to keep it to a pool that is in touch with your services. Otherwise, you will be creating a larger clean-up effort for yourself after you have amassed an unwieldy list. The use of list management software is a good way to strike a balance between a growing list and keeping it up to date.
