Elusive Happiness

About the difficulty in finding happiness. .
Who knew it would be so difficult to be happy
To the point where you forget what it was like
Laughter eludes you and worrying is a habit
You are a shell of what you used to be once
And Life is a series of disappointments galore

You thought you knew once what you wanted
Gut instinct and intuition served you well
You had the hunger to go on for more
When life came crashing down it all changed
The child died and the man emerged

What others thought of you became more important
You compromised to such a point till one day
You saw a new person in the mirror
A hungry insatiable creature of desire
Gobbled by lust, tormented by the past

Gnawing emptiness is all you have now
Not a drop of the ever elusive happiness
You forget now what it smelled, tasted like
All you know is the never ending pursuit
Of sensual pleasures that leave you empty

Is there a way back out of here you ask
"Yes there is. ." a truthful voice says to you
"Just let go of it all, don't hold on. .
You were free once, now you are your own prisoner
You will be happy when you choose to be!"
