She ran until her lungs felt like they were about to burst then she ran some more. She could still hear her mother screaming in her head. She could still her the hiss of the knife being ripped out of the draw by her father.

She closed her eyes as she felt a single tear roll down her cheek. But she kept running. She was finally going to go down the only road that would lead her out of this hell.

She got to the water’s edge, completely out of breath, ready to take the final plunge. She used to spend her childhood here with her cousins. She could picture all of them smiling, her parents laughing as they rolled around the grass together without a care in the world. But that was a long time ago.

Now, it was always dark in the Campbell house. Always yelling, always cries for help.

She stripped off her clothes, shivering as she went. It was freezing but what she was about to do would end the pain. The pain on her skin from the cold and the pain in her heart from her parents.

Soon, she stood completely naked and started to edge slowly into the water. It was so cold, it felt like knives were stabbing all over her body.

"The pain will be over soon…" she said to herself. "It will all be over soon."

She was now up to her waist, panting at the temperature of the water. But she had to keep going. It was the only option.

Her navel, her breasts, her neck, her chin.

She took the final plunge and pulled her head under the icy cold water.

She was freezing yet at the same time, relishing how close she was to the end. She felt her heart start to beat faster, trying to warm her up but it wouldn’t work.

Her lungs were getting thirsty. They needed oxygen but she wouldn’t relent. It was almost over.

60 seconds past… Her lungs felt like they were on fire. They needed something… Anything.

That’s when she inhaled. Not air but water.

The pain was incredible. She tried to choke the water back up but couldn’t. She was gasping for air that would never come.

It was as if God gave her one final gift with the release of her consciousness. She closed her eyes, forced her mouth into a smile and slipped into oblivion.
