Elisha (Chapter 4)

What has/will Sydney do now?
Chapter 4

There was black everywhere: black clothes, black curtains, and a single black coffin.

In just a few days Sydney’s life has fallen astray. Today was supposed to be a day of celebrations, but now it’s a day of mourning. There was crying family, shocked friends, and even a few strangers to Sydney. If Gabriel was still alive he would have introduced her to these unknown guests, but then again, if Gabriel was alive she would never have had a chance to ponder over these mysterious people.

In just two days, Sydney managed to cancel what would have been the wedding of the century, with the help of her concerned mother. Even though they had managed to abolish a wedding, two days was still not enough time to reserve a funeral home, and Sydney couldn’t wait. That is what brought all of these unnecessary people into Sydney’s home. Wow, Sydney couldn’t actually believe Gabriel was dead, let alone believe that she was holding a wake in her house on the night she was to be betrothed.

Sydney didn’t dare enter the room where Gabriel’s coffin resides. She didn’t want what little dignity she had left to be turned to shreds by the remorseful guests. She couldn’t stand the thought of all those people around her while she sobbed.

Unknowing of her destination, Sydney rose and began pace around her home. While trying to avoid unpleasant mingling, she stumbled into her bathroom where she immediately locked the door. Propped against the door she began to slide down until she rested on the floor. As she collected her thoughts the familiarity of the story replayed itself as a few of her guests told it just out side of the door inadvertently in her presence.

"Well they say…" started a woman. She was probably older the way she took frequent pauses for gasping breaths, "he was in the back when they came in. Yes they shot the clerk upfront after they demanded the cash." Chatter broke out among the group, any one conversation was unrecognizable. When the talking subsided the woman’s colloquy pursued, "That’s when he snuck into the bathroom and tried to call the police. But just as he was connected to the emergency station, they got him too. The police said it looked like they broke the door down. He put up a fight, I guess he wanted to live for her... was a shame, poor girl."

She couldn’t take it any longer she wasn’t strong, she couldn’t hold it back. Sydney burst from the bathroom; face tear struck, and went upstairs. As she cantered she glanced at the group, and the embarrassment was universal.

Sydney didn’t emerge from her bedroom until it was only her mom who remained. She was mostly cleaning up the mess and trying to organize materials Sydney would need later that week. Everyone else had dispersed, destined for the Cemetery to watch the burial. Sydney wasn’t in the mood. All she wanted to do was mope around and stay hidden from the world. She understood it wouldn’t be that easy.
