Elisha (Chapter 2 )

Sydney has not yet answered the question, "Where is he?" Will she ever?
Exhausted, Sydney entered their 3 bedroom home and immediately checked the answering machine. "Damn," Sydney thought, "No calls from Gabriel." She tried to erase the subject from her mind, but some how she kept getting drawn back in.

By this time she had multiple theories that derived from gossip she overheard at the rehearsal dinner: what if he got cold feet, what if he met someone else, what if he got into trouble, what if he was dead, or what if he’s only being a workaholic? All of these outcomes didn’t seem plausible to Sydney at the time, but she needed to calm down or she would drive herself to the asylum tonight.

In a desperate attempt to sooth herself she drew herself a bubble bath, using the bath crystals Gabriel bought her ages ago. As the bathtub was filling she walked to the kitchen to retrieve the cordless phone, just in case Gabriel called while she was in the tub.

Entering the bathroom again, a gust of lavender rushed towards her. Just as Sydney turned the faucet off, she heard a solid knock on the heavy oak front door. Perplexed Sydney reached for her robe, and secured it around herself. Sydney could tell she needed to go to the gym soon because she was out of shape; she was already breathing heavy from the jog to the front door.

Out side it was starting to get dark. Most of the children on the block had gone inside. Some parties of the younger couples still carried on, but upon opening the front door everything grew quiet. Sydney noticed a squad car and two officers.

The officers, believing no one was home, started to retreat to their car. One of the officers, a strong broad man with jet black hair and exaggerated features caught a glimpse of the door opening while looking down the street at the house of the partying, young couple. He turned and murmured something to the shorter, heavier man with red hair. At that moment they both turned around and walked sullenly with their heads down, towards Sydney. She knew something was wrong now.

Sydney began to feel a lump form in her throat and she couldn’t breathe. All of her previous thoughts came rushing back at her and she started to sob uncontrollably. As she started to crumble to the cement floor of the porch, the officer with black hair caught her and held on to her while the other man started to talk.

She could feel herself becoming woozy; floating in and out of consciousness, like all of this was just a dream. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She just wished everything would stop and rewind itself back to yesterday when Gabriel and herself went to the beach. They had such a good time, and although it was only yesterday it felt like years ago now.

The night was completely silent except for the grieving cries from Sydney. Neighbors began to gather on their porches and watch the pitiful sight of Sydney crying and screaming. They all were shocked to hear that Gabriel was dead. Gabriel was the nicest person that any of them have ever met.

Anne, Sydney’s neighbor called Sydney’s sister to come to her aid. Once her sister, Rachael appeared in the drive way, the officers collected themselves and went back to their car.

Sydney’s eyes never left the squad car until it vanished around the corner.
