Eleanor Roosevelt's accomplishments were many to name. A very shy child by nature, Eleanor had to face many hurdles in her life. Eleanor Roosevelt (11th October 1884 - 7th November 1962) was born in New York City to Elliot Roosevelt and Anna Hall Roosevelt. She had two brothers along with a half brother. Although, Eleanor was born in a wealthy family, she had a very painful childhood, which turned her into an insecure child. Her mother nicknamed Eleanor as 'Granny' and Eleanor always saw her father struggle with alcoholism. She was constantly made to feel she was ugly which probably led to her insecurity. Eleanor lost her mother when she was only 8 years old and her father passed away two years later. Therefore, Eleanor grew up with her grandmother. This was the time when she was craving for affection. She also had very few friends. The only friends she probably had were the ones from school. At the age of 15, Eleanor was given private training by a very noted personality named Marie Souvestre who honed young Eleanor's mind. This was the time when Eleanor gained self-confidence and changed her ways of thinking.
From there on, Eleanor worked towards the improvement of the status of working women. She received many awards and 35 honorary degrees for her outstanding work.
