Educate Yourself on Self Defense Options

There are many options available for Self Defense from products to classes. Some require no training others can take years to complete. This article gives you an overview of the basics of what you need to know to protect yourself.
Unfortunately, in the world today, being knowledgeable in some sort of self defense product or technique is not only a good idea, it is a necessity. There are many options in products that don’t require any special training and there are classes that can take months or even years to complete. Here is a basic overview of some of the basics of your self defense options.

Personal Alarms are basic self defense items in which it is only necessary to pull out the safety pin to activate an ear piercing alarm. Drawing attention is not something an attacker wants. This is great for anyone to use-even children can be educated on the use of this item to help protect themselves.

Mace and Pepper Sprays are another example of simple to use (just ‘aim and spray’) devices that are extremely effective. And, although easy to use, they come in a large variety of sizes and shapes to suit any personal protection need. There are even larger sizes that are perfect for accommodating homes, offices or RV’s and boats.

The use of Stun Guns and Tasers require a little bit of training-usually just reading the manual, perhaps watching a video, if provided, and practicing - not on a live subject of course. They provide excellent self defense in actual usage and in possible prevention of assault due to their intimidation factor. There are laws in each State and/or County regulating Stun Gun use so please consult your local law enforcement before considering purchasing these items.

Of course, taking a series of classes offers an excellent opportunity to learn self defense in a variety of techniques. These classes may be offered by your local YMCA, law enforcement program or private business. The plus is that you get one-in-one personal attention. The downside is that it can be very expensive, time consuming and may not fit into your schedule.

Another great option for learning to protect yourself is through self defense videos. There is a huge selection and variety of techniques available from renowned experts in the fields of martial arts, Indian fighting skills, military elite, cage fighting and street fighting, with or without a weapon. You need only purchase the video(s) that interest you once and you can replay them as often as you wish. You can practice any time of the day or night as often as it fits into your busy schedule.

Self Defense is our responsibility. With so many options available to us it’s easy to get started with just the basics. Then work on a plan to improve your product knowledge and techniques so that you know that you have done the best you can to protect yourself and, perhaps, your family.
