Eddie Murphy Admits Past Anger Toward Saturday Night Live

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Eddie Murphy admitted that some of SNL's jokes about him got under his skin, but he says he has moved past all of that now.
Eddie Murphy is one of the most successful SNL alums of all time. And given the depth and success of the talent to emerge from that show, that is really saying something. What is unique about Eddie Murphy's time on SNL and his career that followed is that Murphy was a cast member on SNL when Lorne Michaels wasn't calling the shots. As a result, Murphy isn't one of the insiders like the vast majority of former SNL stars. Michaels was tight and remains so with the likes of Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd and Steve Martin - and he basically still runs the careers of recent stars like Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon.

But Murphy wasn't brought to SNL by Lorne Michaels. Instead, Eddie Murphy was brought aboard in 1980 by little-remembered SNL director Jean Doumanian, who replaced Michaels for ten months. Michaels would return to SNL in 1985, at which point Murphy had already moved on to a major film career with such blockbusters as 48 Hours, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop, as well as a feature-length stand-up routine, Delirious, that remains among the best of all time.

When Murphy's film career began to stall in the late 80s and early 90s, Saturday Night Live made fun of him like they would any other struggling superstar. But Murphy was apparently pretty sensitive about his career struggles, and he held a grudge against the show for some time. But with Murphy's career resurgence in recent years and the fact that he'll be hosting the Academy Awards in a few months, it wouldn't be surprising to have Eddie Murphy return to SNL to host the show. No word yet from SNL as to whether that's a possibility, but Eddie Murphy hosting Saturday Night Live would be a huge boost for everyone involved. I'm betting it happens sooner rather than later.
