Economical Birthday Party Ideas

Birthday parties don’t have to be expensive. Traditional birthday parties are perfect for fun and for saving money. Here are ideas for throwing the best birthday party ever.

Traditional birthday parties with games and cake can be themed parties as well. Select a theme that interests your child and develop your birthday invitations, games, decorations and cake around it. Include the date, address, time and a phone number of your birthday invitations and hand deliver or mail them. Make sure they go directly to a parent and request an rsvp, although you may have to follow-up on that! If you are not including everyone in your child’s class at school, do not hand them out there. You don’t want to hurt feelings but it is understandable if you can’t invite everyone.

Ask family members or friends to help with the party if you need to. Simple games and home made crafts at your house can be just as much fun for children as ponies, clowns and inflatables at much less cost. With enough activities planned, your guests will be entertained until the cake and ice cream is brought out and the presents are opened. The party time will fly by and you’ll be left with a happy child, happy guests and parents and happily, no bills to pay.

When children arrive they can begin work on coloring and decorating a brown lunch bag or construction paper party hat. The lunch bag becomes their personalized goodie bag and they are entertained until everyone arrives. Have precut hat shapes ready for coloring and form hats by fashioning them into a cone shape, stapling and adding a piece of elastic.

Keep the games simple and traditional. Pin the tail on the donkey is a classic and musical chairs and go fish are always fun. Prizes can be simple toys from a dollar store and go into their home made goodies bags. Everyone is a winner when prizes are awarded for good behavior and participation.

A paper mache pinata is cheap and easy to make. Stuff it with inexpensive hard candy which is also collected in the goody bag.

Unwrapping gifts and looking at birthday cards is fun for the birthday boy or girl but you can make it fun for your guests as well by making a game out of it. Let each guest hold one of the packages. Turn on some music and have everyone pass their gift to their neighbor. When the music stops, the birthday child opens the one they are holding or the closest one to them.

Home made cakes are simple with packaged cake mixes and canned frosting. Decorate with candles and small toys or make individual cupcakes. With a scoop of ice cream and a juice box, everyone goes home happy and full of yummy treats.

While waiting for their rides home, treat the group to a game of charades. They already have their full goody bags and hopefully you have added an end time to your birthday party invitations! If weather permits, hold your party outdoors for easy clean up. All your preparation will be worth the joy it brings your child and at the end you know you’re done until another year rolls around!
