Eating Difficult Foods with Aplomb
Some people seem to just know how to eat those difficult foods but for the rest of us... here are some tips.
Remember Julia Roberts in the movie "Pretty Woman"? While she managed to look delightfully elegant even as the oyster flew off her hands, not everyone can manage that self-assured look while struggling with difficult-to-eat foods.
Certain foods are admittedly tricky and require a lot of practice to get it right. Whereas you may want to avoid these foods on your first date, mastering the art of eating difficult foods with aplomb can impress your date more than anything other thing you choose to do that night.
Here are some of the tricky foods that are delicious but dare you to come and get them!
Lobster
This is one food that everybody loves to eat but few know how. People who like to appear savoir faire tend to eat just the easy to get portions and leave behind the difficult-to-eat legs and claws. However, the trick to relishing a lobster fully is to work for your reward and pull out every little morsel from the hard-to-reach areas. Lobster purists swear these are the tastiest portions.
Place the claw or leg between a lobster cracker or a nutcracker and apply pressure till the shell cracks. Do not press too hard or else you could ruin the fleshy center. Scoop out the insides with an oyster fork or a specially designed pointed device which reaches in and helps get all the flesh out.
Lobster Newburg is a delicacy all over the world. Lobster also tastes delicious cooked with just melted butter and finely chopped garlic.
Crab
Crabs are eaten the same way as lobsters. Though you need to work hard to get at tastiest portions, the reward is well worth it. Crabs are cleaned well before cooking and the inedible portions are thrown away. After cooking, you can eat almost everything that’s inside the crab’s shell including its delicious lungs.
Though different countries have their own indigenous crab dishes, crab served steamed with melted butter is a universal favorite.

Those who have mastered this art, claim oysters are the simplest seafood to eat. But then again… here’s the trick to looking like an oyster aficionado.
Take your oyster knife and insert it into the hinge of the oyster shell. Pry it open and immediately slide the knife under the flesh of the oyster and cut it off at the point where it is attached to the shell. There you go! Now simply sprinkle your favorite dressing or condiment over it and pop it into your mouth with a bit of flair. If you have the stomach for it, go ahead chew it and enjoy every bite. If you feel squeamish however, it’s okay to swallow it down in one gulp.
Spaghetti
Most non-Italians find it difficult to maneuver the long strands of spaghetti and get it from the plate to their mouth while looking graceful at the same time. The perfect way to accomplish this is by twirling the long stringy spaghetti around your fork and only then lifting your hand away from the plate to your mouth. If the strands seem never ending and you find yourself twirling your fork for what seems like an eternity, it is acceptable to cut the trailing spaghetti strands with a knife.
