Easy Ways to Be Environmentally Friendly
It is easy to become very overwhelmed with all the chatter about global warming and pollution. When it comes to saving the environment we should all do our share. The solution should be to find simple but important things that will make a difference as well as making an effort to get others to take part. I am offering five easy suggestions that can make a difference:
It is easy to become very overwhelmed with all the chatter about global warming and pollution. When it comes to saving the environment we should all do our share. The solution should be to find simple but important things that will make a difference as well as making an effort to get others to take part. I am offering five easy suggestions that can make a difference:
1. Recycle
Haven't we all heard this word, 'recycle', more than once. But do you know the importance of recycling? It is important because it reduces waste we dump into our landfills, and recycling cuts energy usage because the cost and energy of making a product from scratch is much greater than making a recycled product. There are also benefits in that pollution is reduced. Most garbage services will gladly offer you recycling information and containers to get you started and also, check your local directory for a local recycling center, which takes products like plastics, aluminum and paper products too.
2. Save Energy
We can all save energy in so many different ways. One suggestion is to move your thermostat down a few degrees in the winter and up a few degrees in the summer to help cut carbon dioxide emissions. Shutting off appliances and unplugging them when they are not in use is another easy way to save energy. Keeping lights off when not in use is important as well as changing regular light bulbs to the compact fluorescent bulbs that save more energy. There are numerous ways in which you can do your part to save energy; you just have to make a conscious effort to do so.
3. Fuel Efficiency
While not a practical option for everyone, driving a fuel-efficient car is an extreme way to reduce air pollution emissions and economize on gas consumption. Alternative ways to become more fuel efficient would be walking if this is possible, car-pooling, or using public transportation systems. Another simple but efficient thing would be to turn your car engine off while sitting idle for lengthy periods of time, such as in traffic jams or waiting for trains. Try to plan your errands so that your car trips are done in one trip. Small measures like these, multiplied by all of the driving population doing them, could make a dynamic impact on pollution reduction.
4. Chemicals
Pesticides and other lawn chemicals can runoff into water supplies and hurt our environment and our health in so many ways. Household cleaners, chemicals used on cars and clothes and just about everything else can be very harmful to people, animals, and the planet. By being more aware of the chemicals and products used in and around our homes, we can all make a difference.
5. Buy Organic/Local
Relying on local farm produce could conceivably save on transport costs, and reduce pollution on our interstate systems. Vegetables grown organically are safer all around; in our soils, and in our bodies, and for our water sources. Look for local farmer's markets near you and purchase organics from health food and grocery stores.
If every person could find little ways like these to make a difference, our environment could be sustained. It can be exhausting to think about all the help our environment needs and changes that need to be made to ensure our planet is livable in the future. Any effort helps and combined efforts can make a very big difference. We should all start making these changes now and not waiting until it is too late.
