Easy to Grow Vegetables

Fresh, pesticide free vegetables will do for your health that no supplements can do. Vegetable not only add plenty of nutrition to your health, they are very appeasing to the eyes as well. Fresh vegetables harvested from the farms, travels quite a distance to your kitchen via the store, either in frozen form or not so fresh anymore. Trust me, by the time it is time to cook vegetables, the definition of fresh looks pretty pale. Not to mention all the pesticides one has to clean out. So what does one do, unless you are living on a farm, it would be difficult to grow and eat all your vegetables fresh. But there are plenty of vegetables one can try their hands at.

Easiest Vegetables to Grow

Before we get on to the list of easy vegetables to grow, lets us understand what is meant by easy. Easy to grow generally relates to vegetable plants that can be easily started, low on maintenance and easy to harvest. Exotic vegetables do not fit the bill, plus once that need special care and attendance. While trying to grow a vegetable garden, always include plants that are native or easily adaptable. Vegetables can be divided into three main categorizes:
  • Greens (includes herbs)
  • Root vegetables
  • Vines and Creepers
Space, water and the amount of time one is willing to spend growing the vegetables should be also considered. Soil and climatic requirement need to be met for those planning to grow vegetables indoors. Here is a list of vegetables which grow with little maintenance:

Water Cress: Water cress is started with seeds. Just sprinkle a few seeds on the moist soil, in a pot and watch it grow quickly. Seeds can be easily grown on blotted paper too.

Lettuce: There are many varieties one can grow from the family of lettuce, try the smaller ones first. They too can be grown indoors.

Green Beans: Just a few seeds of the dwarf variety green beans; bushy or climbing type will give you lots of produce, and for a long time too.

Green Peas: A cool season crop, soak its seeds for a couple of hours before sowing for speedy germination. Green peas grow on vines, so would require stalking. Sow seeds one inch deep and two inches apart in the row.

Tomatoes: A year round need, tomatoes can be easily grown indoors or outdoors, yearlong. Start with seeds in moist fertile soil. For indoor growing get a bushier variety. Sow seeds a few weeks apart to keep a steady supply going.

Spinach: Another member of the green family, spinach can be easily started with seeds. Sow seeds successively throughout the month, for a continuous supply.

Radishes: Sow seeds and thin them out, water and fertilize regularly, and enjoy the harvest. If you plan to grow them indoors, use container that are deep.

Potatoes: Potatoes can be grown from seed potatoes or chitted ones. They are not space consuming, as they can be grown in bins, tiers or trenches.

Onions: Plant onion seedlings rather than sow seeds. Their major requirement is some weeding and soil loosening.

Herbs: Herbs like mint, clinatro, mustard, garlic, ginger, lavender, rosemary, etc. can all be grown seasonally with very little care.

The more you grow, the more you will realize that most of the vegetables are easy to grow. Water, feed and weed the vegetables regularly and with care, to ensure a healthy fresh flavor to all your meals.
