Easy French Toast

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the usage of French toast started in the English language as early as 1660. It was actually toasted bread with wine, orange juice and sugar. The actual French toast egg recipe, as we know of it today came in 1882. Although the name of the recipe is French toast, it is not necessarily French in origin. It has a striking resemblance to a recipe made in Spain in the medieval ages. There is also a theory that it was known as German toast in England and America before the first World War, but got to French toast due to the anti German sentiment.

Simple French Toast Recipe
This is an ideal treat for Sunday brunch. Depending on the availability of ingredients at home, you can garnish it with ingredients of your choice.

Ingredients
  • Large Eggs 2
  • Milk ¼ cup
  • Ground Cinnamon ½ teaspoon
  • Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon
  • Salt 1 pinch
  • Bread 2 to 4 slices
  • Brushing Oil
Method
  • Beat egg in a mixing bowl, add milk, cinnamon, vanilla and salt to it and whisk well again.
  • Heat an oiled skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  • Soak bread slices in the egg mixture on both the sides, ensuring the slices are coated on either sides.
  • Place the slices on the skillet or griddle and cook the slices on both the sides on low heat, till lightly browned and crisp.
  • Remove from heat and serve hot with maple sauce or any other sauce of your choice.
Easy Baked French Toast
If you have guests over and would like to serve them French toast for breakfast, this is an easy to make French toast recipe, which will save you a lot of work as well as time. It will also ensure all the guests have their breakfast at the same time.

Ingredients
  • Milk 2 cups
  • Large Eggs 3
  • Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon
  • Salt 1/8 teaspoon
  • Sugar 3 tablespoons
  • Old Bread Slices (¾ inch thickness) 12
  • Butter for Greasing
Method
  • Grease a baking dish (13 inch by 9 inch in size) with generous quantity of butter.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs, vanilla, salt, milk and 1½ tablespoons of sugar.
  • Place the bread slices in a greased baking dish.
  • You may have to squeeze the bread slice into the baking dish.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices.
  • Turn the bread slices once or twice, so that all the slices are coated with the egg mixture on either sides.
  • Cover the baking dish and the slices sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile heat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Sprinkle the remaining quantity of sugar on the bread.
  • Bake the bread slices for about 30 to 35 minutes, till the bread is golden in color.
  • Top the French toast with toppings of your choice and serve.

Method
  • Cut the slices of bread diagonally.
  • In a mixing bowl whisk eggs, then add salt, pepper and whisk again.
  • At last add milk to the whisk eggs and mix well.
  • Grease a skillet or griddle with oil.
  • Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture and place them on the griddle or skillet.
  • Let the slices fry on low heat, until golden brown, serve hot.
