What is Earth Science?
Earth Science is the branch of science that pertains to the study of the origin, structure and phenomena of the planet Earth. Earth science is an all-embracing term for the sciences related to the study of the earth and of the universe around it, making it a wide scientific discipline covering all facets of how the earth works. It is a special case in planetary science as the earth is the only known life-bearing planet. Earth Science is also known as the Earth Sciences, Geoscience, and the Geosciences.

Basic Earth Science - Four Branches
The basic four branches of earth science include the sciences:
  1. Geology - study of the earth
  2. Meteorology - study of the atmosphere, weather and climate
  3. Oceanography - study of the oceans
  4. Astronomy - study of the universe
These earth science four branches make use of several science disciplines like geography, geophysics, geodesy, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, chronology, ecology, environmental science, geomatics, climatology, geomorphology, biogeology, soil science, geochemistry, weather, global warming, natural disasters and hydrology to build a quantitative understanding of the Earth system.

The Precambrian Era
The Precambrian Era or Super Eon, spans from the time of the Earth's formation around 4500 Ma, till the evolution of macroscopic shelled animals of the Cambrian Era. In spite of a poor fossil presence to support the geologic timescale, the unearthed specimens educate us on the earliest multi-celled life forms, that inhabited the planet...

Cenozoic Era
The Cenozoic era covers a span of 65 million years ago till the present time. This era is marked by the evolution of angiosperms (flowering plants), grasses, diverse forms of insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and other animal groups.

Theory of Plate Tectonics
The theory of plate tectonics describes the large-scale motions of the Earth's lithosphere. This theory covers the concepts of continental drift which was developed during the 20th century by Alfred Wegener...

Earth's Magnetic Field
The earth's magnetic field is generated by swirling motions of molten iron in its outer core. The earth's rotation plays a significant role in generating the currents which is presumed to be the source of the magnetic field. To know more about it, read on...

How was the Earth Formed
The Earth is the third planet in the solar system. It has undergone several geological changes before it evolved into its present form. To know more about how the Earth was formed, read on...

Earth's Core
The earth's core is the innermost region of the planet. The core is both, solid and molten, and is believed to be cooling down gradually. The iron-nickel composition within is responsible for the electromagnetic field generated around the planet and the consistent seismic activity observed.

Could Archimedes have lifted the earth?
Archimedes, the great mathematician, made a claim to King Hiero of Syracuse that he could move the earth if given a place to stand. But was this really possible? Imagining that he had another planet to stand on and a lever large enough to do so, could he really have moved the earth? Scientifically speaking, yes and no.
