Dual Pane Window Repair Tips
Most of us have installed dual pane windows in our home because we know that they are an effective way to conserve energy. In a situation, when you might have a broken window at hand, here are some tips on how to repair dual pane windows.
While speaking about energy efficient homes, we cannot ignore the fenestration, which encompasses doors, windows and skylights. In every building, the number of windows outnumber the doors. Hence, energy wasted through windows is a major concern and the lost energy is claimed to be as much as 30 percent of the total home energy usage. If you are thinking of replacement windows, make sure you analyze the pros and cons of windows before installing them.
In the past few decades, energy efficient windows with the latest technology have been introduced in the market. The main purpose behind every energy efficient window is to let the sunlight in and obstruct the winter chill. Among the many energy efficient windows, glass pane windows are the most preferred option. Nowadays, single-pane glass windows are replaced by energy saving double and triple glass pane windows, which consist of an additional insulating material between the layers. In between the glass panes, inert gases are pumped to increase its insulating property. The glass panes are also coated with reflection paint for more heat reflection. Let us take a look at some tips on how to repair a dual pane window.
Tips for Repairing Dual Pane Window
Buying the correct size of dual pane window is as important as proper installation of the window. You need to measure the width, height, total thickness and individual thickness of the glass. The easiest way is to measure the dimensions of the frame (from rubber to rubber) and note them down. In case you want the same spacer, you need to give the individual thickness of the glass units.
Though, single and dual pane windows are different structurally and functionally, the repairing tips are almost the same, except for a few variations. Assuming that you have bought the dual pane window of correct size, let's have a look at the steps for repairing them.
First, keep the necessary equipment for the installation within your reach. Remove the old glass panes carefully; you may need to unscrew and remove the units one-by-one. Vacuum clean the dust and glass pieces (if any).
Squeeze and apply some caulk to the frame (where you will be installing the new dual pane window). Make sure that you apply the caulk evenly, so that there are no air-gaps (to avoid entry of chilly air). Place the new unit gently and make sure that it fits in the frame properly.
Once you are sure that the unit is placed well, screw down tightly. Check the pre-drilled holes in the frames and screw the dual window pane accordingly. After securing the screws, try opening, closing and locking the unit. If the windows are working fine, install the new window frame. Place the screws and/or nails to assure a firm grip. Apply more caulk, in case you find any air-gaps.
While purchasing dual pane windows, always opt for the one with a guarantee period. The best quality dual pane windows lasts for about 15 years. It is found that installing soundproof windows, along with dual pane windows increases the life expectancy twice as much. In case, there is moisture accumulation between the glass layers, you can caulk the inside and outside of the units. If moisture still accumulates, replace the insulating glass unit (IGU). Even if you spend more in replacing the IGU, the energy saved is worth paying for.
