Knock Down Drywall Texture
Knockdown or skip trowel drywall texture gives a classy look to the drywall. To create the knockdown texture, mix water in the joint compound until it is thin enough to apply like a paint. Take the paint roller and start applying this over the wall. Instead of a roller you can also opt for a knockdown sprayer to apply your mixture to walls and ceiling, it's easier. Make sure you do not take entire wall at a time, if you are alone doing the paint job. Apply the second coat after 10 minutes. Take the finishing knife to create the texture. You need to press down its flat side against the wall lightly, at 45 degree angle. Don't be too hard while pressing. Drag it over all the painted area, you will have a smooth texture. Wondering how long does it take for a drywall texture to dry? It needs at least 24 hours for the wall to dry completely. This technique gives a classic earthy finish to the walls.

Orange Peel Drywall Texture
This is one of the most popular drywall texture techniques. As the name suggests, the finished wall looks exactly like the surface of an orange peel. The wall surface will have similar tiny indentations all over. While working on this drywall finishing technique you need to be really fast. Also, the mixture needs to be extremely thin, just check that it's not runny. One of the important drywall texture tips is that while you do this task, check the consistency of the compound on a wall that will be blocked behind the furniture. You need to create this texture using a sprayer. You will have to spray the textured compound on the walls at a lower pressure than usual. Start spraying the mixture using the sprayer, remember to be fast. Let it dry for 10 minutes and then spray the next coat. Once it is completely dry, after about 24 hours you can finish by painting with a regular paint of desired color. Learn about drywall installation tips and techniques.

Remember, thicker consistency is a must to have a bolder looking texture. Once two coats are applied, you need to work in the similar fashion, as that in case of the knockdown texture technique.
