Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a powdered formulation that is applied on hair during those times when you do not have the time to wash your hair. It is an excellent product to have in your bathroom cabinet.
Do you remember those times when you are rushing out to work or are getting ready for an important date and you notice that your hair looks dirty and greasy. There is absolutely no time for you to wash and dry your hair and you cannot go out with limp greasy hair. A dry shampoo comes to your rescue during these times and you can easily apply it to your hair to get rid of excess oil and grease. Although dry shampoo cannot give you the same results as conventional shampoo, it is an excellent remedy for emergencies.

A dry shampoo has a talcum base, with volumizing agents which absorbs excess sebum from the roots and scalp and give your limp hair a matte effect. It also creates an illusion of plumped up and sleek effect. It comes in a powder form in containers or in aerosol bottles. You simply need to apply the powder evenly all over your hair or spray your roots with the dry shampoo. Now brush your hair gently to remove any white residue and you will be left with clean, non greasy hair.

Dry Shampoo Recipe

There are many varieties of commercial dry shampoos available in the market that you can choose from. They also come in different varieties that are suitable for different hair types like fine hair, curly hair, color treated hair and oily hair. But it is also possible to make dry shampoo from some simple ingredients that are available in your home.

Cornmeal and Almond Shampoo

To make the cornmeal and almond shampoo, you will need the following ingredients.
  • 2 tablespoons cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon ground almond
  • 1½ tablespoons orris root
In a small bowl, combine the cornmeal, orris root and ground almond and mix everything well. Keep this mixture in a small air tight bottle and apply 1 tablespoon of this mixture on the roots of your hair. Massage it on your scalp and use a paddle brush to brush out the mixture from your hair. This homemade dry shampoo will absorb the excess oil present on the surface of the hair follicles and your hair will appear healthy and free from grease. If you feel that your hair still looks greasy, apply one more tablespoon of this mixture and brush the shampoo out.

Baking Soda and Oatmeal Shampoo

The ingredients that are needed to make this shampoo are as follows.
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 cup ground oatmeal
In a medium-sized bowl, mix the ground oatmeal with baking soda so that they are thoroughly combined. Sprinkle a bit of this mixture on the roots of your hair and use a hair brush to work the mixture evenly through the length of your hair. The shampoo will absorb the greasiness from your hair and make it more manageable.

If you would rather use commercial dry shampoo then it is best that you read the shampoo reviews before you purchase one. This will help you in finding out which shampoo is the most suitable for your hair instead of depending solely upon the advice of the beauty adviser. Some good dry shampoo for greasy hair are Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, Lush Candy Fluff Powder, Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray, Klorane Shampoo Dry and Batiste Dry Shampoo.

It is important to remember that dry shampoo is no substitute for the real thing and it should only be used during emergencies. Ideally, hair should be washed twice a week and oily hair should be washed more frequently. It absorbs the excess oil from hair but it cannot clean dirty hair. So, to keep your hair and scalp clean and healthy, you need to wash your hair with a conventional shampoo.
