Dry Scaly Eyelids

Dry scaly eyelids can be a very uncomfortable and unsightly cosmetic concern, rather than being just a medical problem. Know about the symptoms, causes and treatment for this condition, from this article.
The most common cause of dry scaly eyelids is the condition called eyelid dermatitis. This is manifested in the form of an allergic reaction, which is caused due to direct contact of the eyelids with certain substances. These include cosmetics, cleansers, food, eyelash curlers, hair dye and some shampoos. Other causes include atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and blepharitis.

Symptoms

Dry scaly eyelids is a symptom in itself and apart from the dryness and scales, there are other accompanying symptoms. These may include itchy flaky eyelids, discoloration of the skin, swelling, red scaly eyelids and soreness. These symptoms, however, are not known to occur in every case.

How is the Condition Treated

# The first line of treatment to counter the condition is use of ample moisture. First, go for a lotion that can hydrate the dry skin, helping it to renew and recuperate. However, considering the delicate area of the skin, not just any kind of lotion or ointment will do and that is why special treatment is required to be exercised. So before going for any kind of cream or gel, decide on one that will suit your skin type. The next thing to do in the treatment of red flaky eyelids would be getting rid of substances you suspect to be allergens. It is better to get diagnosed by a dermatologist in order to determine what is causing the allergy. If the cause has been found to be blepharitis, then the treatment involves controlling the symptoms, as there is no definite treatment for it. Discomfort in the eyes can be managed by applying a warm compress over the eyelids. Apply it for 5-10 minutes. This method helps soften the scales on the dry flaky eyelids, making them easier to remove.

# Make a solution of warm water (¾ a cup) and 2-3 drops of lavender oil. Stir the solution properly and dip two cotton balls in it. Squeeze them to get rid of any excess liquid and place each cotton ball on each closed eyelid. Alternatively, you can brew some black tea and soak two cotton balls in it. Let them soak until saturated with the tea and place each cotton on each eye. Instead of using cotton balls, you can also use cool tea bags, placing directly on the eyes.

# You can also dampen a clean washcloth with warm water and fold it in half. Put some 2-3 drops of lavender oil on the inside of the cloth and place it over your eyelids. Take care that the oil does not get in your eyes. Applying this method once in a day helps replenish the lost moisture from the eyelids, and reduce its scaliness and dryness.

Dry scaly eyelids can be prevented by avoiding its causes. Avoid the tendency to rub your eyes way too often and do not forget to remove all traces of makeup before going to sleep. Also, inculcating a balanced diet, especially one that is rich in vitamins, enhances the health and beauty of the skin and also prevent occurrence of such conditions.
