What is chronic dry eye syndrome? This article will help you know the details about causes, symptoms and treatments of dry eye syndrome.
Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eye syndrome is a common disorder related to tear film in our eyes. Your eyes are coated with a thin film of tears in order to keep the vision optimal and comfortable. Three layers of the tear film are as follows. The mucus layer which is the innermost and the thinnest layer, the aqueous layer which is largest and thickest and the lipid layer which is most superficial and thin. The aqueous layer consists of dilute saltwater solution. This layer is produced by the lacrimal glands which are present under the upper lids and the accessory tear glands. This layer keeps your eye moist and comfortable. It also helps remove off any dust, or foreign objects that might get into the your eye. Chronic dry eye syndrome is commonly caused due to defects in this aqueous layer. Dry eye syndrome, also referred to as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is caused due to decreased tear production or excessive tear evaporation. Let us know the causes, symptoms and treatment of dry eyes.

Dry Eye Syndrome Causes

Along with improper functioning of the mucus layer that spreads the tear on eye surface, dry eyes can be caused by various other reasons that cause poor production of tears and drying out of the tear film. Tear production decreases as you get older, so aging is also one of the dry eye syndrome causes. Regular exposure to environmental factors like wind, sun, hot blowing air, dry climate can lead to dry eyes. Hormonal changes in women, especially those happen during menopause and can be one of the dry eye syndrome causes. Decreased blinking of eyelids lead to poor tear production, further causing dry eyes. This usually happens while you watch television or work on a computer. An inflammation along the edge of your eyelids which is known as Blepharitis can also cause dry eyes. Dry eyes can be caused as a side effect of some medications like antihistamines or hormonal pills. Read more on dry eyes causes and symptoms.
