Cough is a way of body's reaction to different types of irritants that lead to an inflammation of throat, larynx, bronchial tubes, lungs, etc. Dry cough causes can be innumerable, from allergies, asthma to infections and exposures to chemicals. Dry cough induces an urge to cough and when you do, you end up coughing more. During such times, a glass of water is the best remedy for dry cough. Besides, there are a few remedies for dry cough that can relieve you from incessant coughing.

Dry Cough Remedies

Hot Beverages
The steam that erupts from hot beverages such as tea or soups, soothes the irritation in the throat and gives you some relief. Adding a spoonful of honey and a pinch of turmeric in a piping hot glass of milk coats the lining of the larynx and soothes the inflammation. This is a great remedy for dry cough at night. This concoction also induces a deep sleep.

Steam Therapy
Standing in a hot shower for about 15 minutes works great for your irritated throat. The steam from the hot water hydrates the throat, thereby reducing the occurrence of dry cough. Alternatively, you can also harness the therapeutic uses of steam by directly inhaling the steam erupting from hot water.

Humidifier
The main cause of dry cough is extra dry air with very less humidity. Winter is the season when dry cough worsens, due to lack of moisture in the air. Such extreme climate conditions exacerbates dry cough. Investing in a good humidifier is a good option to keep dry cough due to dry air at bay.

Cider Vinegar
Cider reduces the inflammation in the throat and upper respiratory tract, thus eliminating dry cough. Add a couple of spoonfuls of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. You may have to keep adding it until you achieve a desired taste. Slowly sip it whenever there is an urge to cough. This is a good dry cough remedy.

Ginger
Take a small piece of ginger and peel it. Slowly chew it until the urge to cough disappears completely. This is an effective dry cough remedy which works in most cases. However, given the fierce properties of ginger, care should be taken that you consume it in small proportions only.

Throat Lozenges
Throat lozenges or peppermint candies provide an instant but temporary relief from dry cough. You can make some lozenges at home yourself that work against dry cough. Grind some black pepper and caraway seeds and mix them with a pinch of salt. Make them into small balls and suck them, until the coughing urge vanishes.
