Drowning - Part 3
Lilly, Harold, Will, and the boss set out to find Jack. Would their search be futile or will it pay off?
"Boss!" cried a voice in the middle of the god-awful dream. I felt my eyes flutter open and the pain of light against my eyes. As my eyes adjusted I saw Lilly standing over me, tapping her foot against the floor of my bedroom looking as annoyed as I felt. "We gotta' get a going!"
Groaning, I rolled over and glanced at my non-too-reliable alarm clock and saw that it was already half past five a.m. Before Lilly could start griping, I propelled myself off the bed and stalked over to the dresser, waking up with every step. The mirror of my vanity granted me the image of a long midnight black haired, heavy lashed, gray eyed, skinny chick that seriously needed a bath. As I shrugged off my night shirt and got on a pair of jeans and t-shirt, another knock came at my door.
"Why do girls always take the longest getting ready," asked Will, coming in just in time to see my exposed upper chest region. He cursed and reared back against the door frame, shielding his eyes. "Warn a brother next time, jeez!"
I turned and heard a 'thud' then an 'ouch' from Will.
"Leave boss alone!" exclaimed Lilly.
"Why you assho-..." began Will.
"You guys ready?" asked the familiar voice of Harold; this time luckily I was fully dressed.
"It's a shame not even monster slayers can't get some decent respect and alone time," Lilly snorted as I pictured her twirling a piece of her hair in between her index and middle finger as she usually did.
Yep, that was us, monster slayers. Had been ever since I turned 13 and now that most of the slayers were dead, I had been nominated captain. Such an honor issuing orders that would most likely kill everyone, isn't it? But that was nearly seven years ago, damn I felt old. What monsters you might ask...?
"Please, women are almost as bad as demons," retorted Will.
"Really, I believed them to be like vampires," corresponded Harold.
Lilly retaliated and said, "At least we don't smell like stinky werewolves."
Does that answer your question?
Exhausted from the restless sleep, thanks to the dream, I pulled myself together and clapped my hands together, gathering their attention and ending their conversation.
"You guys, get it together and lets head out," I said, rolling my shoulders as if my stress would simply fall off them.
They all murmured 'yes boss's and then turned and filed out of my room like soldiers. Did it bother me that no one seemed to remember my name? Not really; Blame wasn't a good name to have, it just wasn't right.
I looked over my shoulder one last time and stared into the reflection of the mirror, idly fixing a few stray hair in my pony tail, then followed my fellow warriors. Like always, Phil was nowhere to be seen; we never said goodbye to each other because then it would suggest we may not come back and Lilly said that was bad luck. Marissa did not join us either, not surprising, but I would be lying if I said I did not want her with us; she was an excellent fighter but hated fighting. Whatever god was out there, he seriously messed up when he gave the preppy-manicured-Marissa stealthy fighting skills. And Jimmy did not appear in the garage for departure but I think Lilly may not have filled him in on everything. He was a great guy and really helped us, but at times he could be a hand full.
"Right, everyone ready?" I asked, looking in each of their faces.
Harold's big bambi brown eyes, stared back at me as he nodded, ash blonde hair falling in front of his eyes as his head moved. Will shrugged, his cloudy blue eyes staring off into space as his muscled toned body flexed beneath the plain white t-shirt he wore and his short curled black hair bounced lightly against his forehead. Lilly, on the other hand, shouted 'yes, ma'am,' her southern accent peeking through her tone. Her big green eyes danced with excitement as her short brown hair wisped against her chin.
"Right, then lets head out," I command, not able to hide the pride I felt towards my team as I smiled.
"I hope we find Jack," Lilly murmured beneath her breath as she climbed into the SUV, totally reminding me of my dream and killing my mood.
Will rolled his eyes from the back seat as Harold made a kissy face and kissing sounds from behind Lilly. I shifted the car into reverse and pulled out of the driveway, ignoring the sure argument that was to come and focused on a mental picture of Jack. I really, really, hoped he was okay.
