  • Scissor
  • Sewing machine
  • Medium-sized safety pin
  • Cotton thread, that matches with the fabric

Step #1: For making drawstring bags you can use different kinds of fabric. The easiest to work with is felt, as felt material doesn't fray. You can also use an upholstery weight fabric. Once you selected the kind of fabric you want, follow the second step. Read more about, paper bags.

Step #2: Now cut a 12 inch wide by 24 inch long piece of fabric. Then fold the piece of fabric in half along its length, with the right sides together to make a 12 inch square. Then start at the fold sewing up the left and right side of the bag with some seam allowance. Stop before 2 ½ inches from the top of each side.

Step #3: Now work on only one half of the bag at a time, and fold and iron the hem of the seam allowance. Then fold an iron ¼ the inch hem along the top side of the bag. Fold this fabric over another ¾ inch to make a hem and iron it. This will make the drawstring channel. Sew the bottom edge of this hem, by maintaining a small seam allowance. Then repeat this for other half of the bag.

Step #4: Now fold both the corners of the bag, so that the side seam of the bag is lying exactly down the middle of the corner point. Now you will need to sew a gusset seam, perpendicular to side seam. Place a non slip ruler along the side of the drawstring channel, and draw a line with marker approximately 2 inches below the point of the corner. Repeat on the other side. Remove the triangular fabric above the marked lines, and use sewing to close the open edges.

Step #5: Now attach a safety pin to one end of the ribbon, and thread it through the drawstring channel on one side of the bag, and then back around the other side, so that both ends of the ribbon are now on one side. Repeat with other ribbon piece starting on opposite side of the bag, and leave around 5 inches of the ribbon on either side, then tie them in knots and cut out the excess. Hold the knots on either side and pull in the outwards direction, the bag will cinch and close.

So, follow the above instructions and use beautiful patterned colorful fabrics, to make different drawstring bags.
