Drain Flies Extermination
Drain flies are one of the common problems faced by many people. They belong to a group of small to moderately large flies. The following article tells you about some useful methods for drain flies extermination.
Drain Flies - How to Get Rid of Them
- The first step in drain flies extermination will be locating the floor drains present in the lower level of the house and removing their covers.
- Use a searchlight to look inside the drain mostly towards the inside walls and upper edges of the drain pipe for any sludge buildup. You will mostly find drain flies there. They live and breed above the present water level in the sludge buildup. You can use a probing tool to check the area by scratching it a bit.
- Next step is to clean the sludge present in the drain pipe. Use a scrub brush, hot water and cleaning liquid for this purpose. Do not forget to wear rubber gloves before cleaning the drain pipe. Clean the upper part of the drain pipe and the drain covers as well.
- Pour down hot water in the drain pipe to flush away the sludge. You can also use a spray bottle for this purpose as it is necessary to clean the inside walls of the drain pipe nicely. It will be better if you use hot boiling water.
- Now, put some bleach in an empty spray bottle and spray it down the drain, covering all the interior walls and the top lid. Then, put some bleach in the drain. This will kill the flies and contaminate their food which is stored in the drain.
- Now, check for stagnant water in places below the sinks, behind the refrigerator, under the dish washer and around the water heater. Remove the water and dry the area. Put bleach in the area where the water was collected as drain flies mostly breed on stagnant water.
- Drain flies are mostly found in the floor drains rather than the kitchen or tub drains as these drains are flushed out regularly.
- The best method for drain flies removal is flushing the drains with hot water and putting bleach in the drains.
