Down the Rabbit Hole - Part 4: Rules & Questions
Be sure to read the other three parts first... and yes I'm back!!! :)
*** The 'Cheshire Cat' stepped off his thrown-like chair and walked to where I was standing. "Alice," he held out his hand, not for me to grab it, but directing the way down the hall. He led me through multiple twists and turns giving me tips on how I could prevent getting lost. Once we arrived at my room he opened the door. The room was amazing! It was bigger than my entire apartment! It had a huge round bed, a giant closet which was currently empty, a huge bathroom, and its own miniature kitchen. I joked "The only thing it's missing is the hot tub."
He smiled, leaned over, and pushed a button. Up the tub came from the floor and filled itself with water. I stood there shocked.
"Oh," He began "You don't look very comfortable, I'll get someone to measure you for clothes."
"Thank you."
He nodded his head and beckoned me to follow him. He lead me out of the room down another hall. "It's a dead end." I looked at the wall before us in confusion. He knocked on it three times and pressed some invisible button. When he did, a door opened. It led to a much smaller room with a few beds, a couple food storage areas, and a bathroom. "What is this room for?"
"It's the 'Safe Room'. Just in case."
"Oh alright."
He signaled for me to lead the way back to my room. I assume he wanted to make sure I knew the way. IF I actually ended up being this legendary Alice, he needed me to be safe. I made sure I wasn't taking what he was doing for me the wrong way; it was his responsibility.
"Do you need anything else?"
"No, I'm alright for now."
He bowed and closed the door. He was so quiet it was ridiculously frustrating. If I'm the legendary Alice can I command him to talk more? I needed something to come from him. A name, his age, anything would be helpful...
*** Only a little while after I received clothes to change into and plenty for the rest of the time I would be here, I was summoned to the kitchen to eat dinner. They also needed to speak with me about my journey and rules or something like that.
"Alice! Please sit." The duchess told me as I moved through the door. The table was long and there were plenty of chairs on either side of it. The duchess sat at the end of the table while the Duke was away. The duchess's son, who was currently staring at me with a smile on his face, sat on her right. I was told to sit on her left. We ate a small starting salad, a gorgeous turkey, and this odd purple dessert I'd never had in my life. There was so much food I can't list everything, but it was all amazing! "I hope you enjoyed it all, Alice." The duchess began, "However, we need to speak." Richard, the White Knight, had made his way to the chair right next to the Cheshire Cat.
"Indeed, we do." Richard chimed in.
"We need to speak of some rules and how we'll send you on this journey." The duchess continued, giving him a look. "There are some things you must not do and some people to help you along your way." They explained this long journey that I would soon go on in order to prepare myself for defeating the queen of hearts. These were the rules I was to follow at all times:
1. I would have a cell, but the only person I could answer to was the duchess herself.
2. I must never tell anyone I'm here
3. Stay as far away from the red queen as possible.
I also would encounter some people. First as I traveled through what they called 'square 2' I would meet a twins. T-Dee and T-Dum, would supply us with the proper tools for life. In 'Square 5' I would encounter a carpenter would teach me to fight. In 'Square 7' I would find an elderly man who was quite bizarre, who would teach me to 'see'. By 'Square 9' I will have made a full circle and I would be ready for the battle. The duchess also explained that I would be taking very little with me. She gave me a list of items, such as water and food, that she was sending with me. The list included her son; he was going to protect me in case anything went wrong. I don't think I'll mind this journey at all. This may even be fun.
*** After dinner the duchess's son was watching some strange show on their huge T.V.
"Hey, may I talk to you really quick?" he nodded, paused whatever he was watching, and looked at me, waiting for my question. "We're starting on this 'journey' thing tomorrow, and I know virtually nothing about you! Well, except for the fact that you hardly ever talk."
He laughed quietly and signaled me to follow him. He lead me back to my room and closed the door. "What would you like to know?"
"Well, your name?" I asked sitting down on my mini couch.
"Not important right now." He replied sitting down as-well.
"When will it be?"
He just shrugged his shoulders.
"Hmm, fine. Why don't you talk very often?"
"Never feel like words should be used when gestures keep people like you guessing." He flashed his gorgeous smile at me.
"People like me?"
The Cat nodded.
"I guess I'm confused."
"Don't be."
"Ok, well how do we know where to go?"
He got up and walked over to my dresser; there was a piece of paper lying on it. He handed it to me. There were a bunch of arrows pointing this way and that, up and down, all over the place! "How does this help me... us?"
"Guess we'll see tomorrow."
"You mean you don't know?"
He shook his head.
"Oh boy. Well, I guess that's the questions all I have. Thanks for answering... uh, most of them" I smiled.
"Is it my turn?"
"For what"
"To ask the questions"
"If you feel like actually talking" I smiled, joking.
He laughed gently. He was about to open his mouth and release his breath-taking voice, when his mother called, "CAT!!"
"Even your mother calls you that?"
He nodded and got up. "We'll talk later." Then he lowered his head and left the room silently. I stayed up wondering what I would do tomorrow, what Cat and his mother were talking about, if he was coming to talk tonight, and what his name really is! Eventually I did fall asleep.
*** I woke up early the next morning to a knock on my door; behind it stood the Cheshire Cat. "Sleep well?"
He smiled, leaned over, and pushed a button. Up the tub came from the floor and filled itself with water. I stood there shocked.
