Down the Rabbit Hole - Part 3: A Smile Can Change the World

This chapter is shorter than the others but I'm sure you will enjoy it just as much, if not more :).
Personally I believe that this part of the story is the best so far. I think you'll agree... ENJOY!!!

Also, thanks to Colin and Hannah for commenting on the last chapter :)

*** It felt like I had been falling for hours but as I neared the ground I slowed down. I landed softly on both feet in front of a glass door. Outside it I could see plenty of dark brown dirt and deep green trees. There were large vines, various grass patches, and over-sized rocks. It was a forest of imagination. As I stepped through the door I was greeted by a man in full white armor. He seemed to be around the age of 27. I tripped over the ledge and onto a patch of grass. "May I help you up?" He asked pleasantly.
"Sure, but I'm not sure where I am would you mind telling me?"

"You're in the city of Hearts, darling. No, don't tell me you're... ugh not another. Come on, you're lucky I came by we need to get out of this area." He pulled me along rather quickly.
"What's the rush."
"We're standing in a war ground. Don't you see it?"
I looked out into the woods and past some trees into a green field, but there was no one there. "No."
"Hmm. But you see me?"

"Yes, obviously. I don't believe I'd still be standing here talking to mid air."
"Alright. What is your name?"
"Al - Clare."
"No, it's not. What were you going to say?" He caught my mistake.
"Alice." I said lowering my head. He put his hand under my chin lifting my head back up.
"Alice, hmm? Wait... ALICE!!!"
"Yes." I began to thing this man had lost his mind
"The Alice? Alice of all the legends?"
"Umm."
"We must get you to the duchess!" I began to wonder what world this man lived in, but seeing how disarranged and miss-sized everything is here, something must be up.

*** We approached a house standing on its top, completely upside-down. He shoved me through a small door, which led to a rather large house. To my surprise the inside was right ways up. Inside was sitting a woman of age 42, I assumed, sitting in a decorated chair near the fireplace. She was wearing a white gown and her blonde hair was up on her head like a house. It was strange, I can assure you. On her left was a younger man, about my age, who was indeed her son. The resemblance was noticeable... matching blue eyes and facial features. His hair, however, was a curly and black in color. He probably had an attitude growing up in royalty his whole life too, but I shouldn't assume things about people. The knight informed me that the woman was the duchess and that was indeed her son. He also said the people around here called her son the Cheshire Cat. When I asked why, he told me that was another story for another time.
"Your Duchess." The knight said respectfully bowing.
"Richard, what can I do for you?" She turned to me and said "Who is this" in a tone not pleasant.

"Alice, is her name."
"Of legend?" She asked. Why people keep asking that, I am not sure. I'm no blonde and I'm not a fictional character. When the duchess said those two words the Prince, or whatever her son was, stared at me confused but never said a word.
"That's what I came here to find out, but she seems rather confused as to what this place is. Shall we explain?"
"You start." You could tell this woman always got her way.
"Of course," He began. "Alice, Let me be the first to actually welcome you to Hearts. Now let me explain a little before the duchess and her son take over. The rest of the White knights and I have been in a war with the Queen of Hearts and her knights for five years. See, hundreds of years ago the Red and White queen reigned together as the Queens of Hearts. There was a disagreement between the heirs of their throwns five years ago, ever since then we've been fighting. The war - you didn't see - is, in fact, right outside the forest... why you can't see them is far beyond me." He turned to the duchess "Would you like to continue?"

"Of course. Alice in the legends is an amazing fighter. It is also said at first she will not have the 'seeing' eyes, but she will within time. The Alice of legend goes on a journey finding these twins along the way, who help her in her quest to see what she needs. This may not all be true, but what is true is that this Alice will help bring peace back to the city of hearts." She turned to her son who's REAL name I didn't know. This would be the first time I've heard his voice, but he remained silent and looked and the ceiling. He appeared to be thinking, but maybe he was stuck up liked I'd imagined.
"Alice," The knight, Richard, continued "Will you choose to stay in Hearts and help us win the war?"
"Is this some kind of joke the White Rabbit is playing on my mind? I fell hours and I'm perfectly fine... is this a trick to get me to say something?"
"No."

"I - this is really weird for me. I am not even sure what this place is. The houses stand on their roofs and the rocks are oversize. I feel so small in this place. I just - I need to think about it. I have a family at home I need to think about too you know." They granted me the opportunity to step outside and let me walk around in the forest to think over things. I didn't know what to do. After a while someone was approaching where I was. To my shock it was the son of the duchess, the 'Cheshire Cat'. "Hello. What are you doing here?" I asked
"I just wanted to see you before you left, in case you did." That was the first time I heard him talk. His voice was amazing, and he didn't seem stuck up like I had imagine at all. "Goodbye, Alice." Before I could say another word he was gone into the woods somewhere. I looked to see which way he walked, but there were no prints and all that was left was a drawing of a smile in the sand. When I looked closer it was signed. "Cheshire Cat".

I heard someone else approaching me, it was the White Knight. Until I knew who the Cheshire Cat was, I was not leaving this place. I was always a girl of mystery, I loved solving things that seemed to be unsolvable. That's why I went on this case in the first place. "Alice, before you decide I just want to say -"
I interrupted. "I already have. I will stay until I decide, if I do, that staying here would not benefit anyone."

"Thank you." The knight bowed with respect and led me back into the house. "She has chosen to stay!" He proclaimed cheer fully. The duchess, with a straight face, clapped a few times and said "Very good. Then she shall stay here! No one else must know she is in Hearts."

The 'Cheshire Cat' or whatever his name is smiled immediately after the Duchess said I would stay with them, but he remained silent. "Servants, lead Miss Alice to her room."
"I'll do it, mother. I'll show her around as well, as it would be terrible for her to get lost."
"Are you quite sure? You are related to royalty you do not have to."
He nodded his head. He didn't speak much from what I gathered, but he was absolutely not stuck-up like his mother. The 'Cheshire Cat' stepped off his thrown-like chair and walked to where I was standing....
