To do this, first determine the kind of sash that it is - is it a double hung sash? A casement sash or a sliding cash? All of these will hold the glass pane in place. An aluminum window replacement will require a different approach than a vinyl window replacement. While some might allow you to remove the entire sash, some will need to be repaired in the place itself. That is why determining the kind of sash it is important. You could even take the help of a handyman in this to get a headway of the work that is needed to be done.

Remove the Panes
Remove the panes from their sashes by unscrewing the nails and other parts that have held the panes firmly in place. If you're looking to repair the pane then carefully remove and place onto a flat surface. Study the panes to determine the kind of damage that has been done. Sometimes the panes will be beyond repair and the only choice that will remain is to have new glass panes fitted in. These will then have to be ordered from a glass store, which can only be done after the thickness and other measurements of the glass are noted down. Also an important point to take note of is that you will need to see how far in the glass panes have been put into the rubber gauze. Accordingly, you'll need to order for the new glass.

Fitting New Panes
Take into account what exactly needs to be done here - a piece of the glass might have broken so that you'll need to remove and clean that pane up. To do this, take a sharp object and carefully scrape the old glass from the pane. Make sure no debris remains. Then take the new glass and clean it thoroughly before setting it in. Clean it thoroughly for fingerprints and the like and then set about to fixing it in. Then put the glass in its place and seal it with a silicone that has been run on all sides. Be absolutely sure that you do not leave a gap here or else the problem of condensation will be haunting you forever. After the silicon has been put in, leave it in for a minimum of 24 hours before even touching it. It needs to permanently set.

Reinstalling Window Frame
Now that the most difficult part of the double pane window repair is done, all you need to do is fix the unit back into place and screw it up real good. Once it has been fixed, check for any gap or loosened edges and be absolutely sure that you have put it well. If you find any gaps then apply caulk to seal the area and make it air tight.
