*Seth's POV*
'Is it me or is something bad about to happen?' Rana mused.
It was another sunny afternoon and we'd just finished training. I was lying on my back in the grass, my head resting on her stomach.
'You mean bad as in Iorwen chopping Flynn to pieces?' I suggested.
'Something like that.' She giggled.
I didn't know what had happened in that forest, but from the smug grin Flynn was wearing, I had a pretty good idea. I sensed Iorwen was furious, but she didn't let it show. She was always smiling at him, giggling at his jokes. So not Iorwen.
If I were him, I'd be scared to death by now. Elves were pretty high on my 'you don't want to make this angry' list. Flynn seemed to find it extremely funny. I didn't understand what he liked about Iorwen. I mean, sure, I liked her, but as a friend. She was so...so...not human.
I rolled over on my stomach, now lying next to Rana. I traced the line of her face, her jaw and mouth, enjoying the warmth of her skin.
'What is it?' She asked, her eyes closed.
'Nothing, I just like you.' I answered, grabbing her arm and rolling her on top of me.
'That's good news.' She said softly, while gazing into my eyes.
*Flynn's POV*
Training had been exhausting, so I decided to take a nap until dinner. I had almost drifted off...
The feeling of a feather light touch on my face. Cold fingers stroking my face, sliding down to my neck...
I shot up and opened my eyes. No one. Sleepy, I blamed it on my imagination and closed my eyes again.
...from my neck to my chest, circling down my arms...
Once again, no one. I sat up, looking around the tent. There was really no one to see, I was sure of it. I smiled.
...nails softly sliding down my chest again, sending shivers across my skin...
This time, my arms shot forward, but only caught air. Dammit, she was fast. Bloody elf reflexes. I closed my eyes again, waiting. Nothing happened, I waited and waited, until I almost fell asleep again.
...down, lower and lower, until...
'I don't think that's such a good idea.' I whispered. Iorwen's hands stopped moving, but she laughed softly.
'Don't you want to find out?' She whispered in my ear, her hair draped next to my face, like a curtain. I still had my eyes closed, knowing she'd be gone when I opened them. She continued talking.
'...because I'm about to jump your bones.' She didn't just say that. Did she?
It was too much for my already tortured hormones, especially because she softly bit my earlobe after she'd said that. I reached forward to grab her and never let go, but she caught my wrists and pinned them on the ground.
'Oh no, you're not doing anything, you've done enough.' I did what I could, but I couldn't pull free. She chuckled, noticing my frustration. She leaned towards me, her lips hovering inches above mine, her cool breath on my hot skin, but the moment I thought she'd kiss me, she chuckled one last time and pressed a kiss just above the band of my pants. My eyes flew open, shocked, but I was alone.
It took minutes before my breath was even again and was not so turned on anymore. I was extremely annoyed. One, she can't just say something like that me and then leave me that way. Two, Why in blazesname had she been stronger than me? And three, I hadn't slept at all!
I crawled out my tent, my eyes blinking in the sunlight. I immediately saw her sitting in the grass. Just a glance at her, made me want her more, made me want her to like me the way I liked her. All this teasing asked a lot of my self-control. The moment I would grab her and kiss her like there was no tomorrow was very close. I didn't care she'd chop me to pieces after that.
'Flynn!' Rana yelled. She was sitting next to Iorwen in the grass. 'Did you have a nice nap?'
I rolled my eyes, even though her question sound sincere. Iorwen probably hadn't told her.
'Terrific!' I shouted back. Iorwen smiled, Rana didn't notice, I did. I made me even more angry.
I walked down to the river and splashed some water in my face.
'Hey sleepyhead.' I heard someone say. I whipped around to see Seth and Ayele standing there.
'What?!' I snapped. Enough references to my not-so-great-nap, thank you very much.
'Are you coming, or do we have to do all the work?' Seth asked, folding his arms, not in the least impressed my mood.
'What are you in blazesname talking about?'
'I dunno about the Blaze chap, but Iorwen said you had offered to gather wood, so we thought we'd lend you a hand.' Ayele said.
'She said I WHAT??!' I hated her. Not that my body listened to that. 'Okay, fine, I'm coming.' And the three of us walked into the forest, but not before I saw Iorwen's little triumphant smile.
'Dude, there's smoke coming out of your ears. Literally.' Seth commented.
'Shut. Up.'
'Yessir, Mr. Grumpy, sir!' Seth saluted. I didn't react and stamped off, deeper into the woods, Seth and Ayele laughing- almost giggling- behind me.
We chopped wood in silence. Well, Ayele used his Earth powers to let the trees fall apart in neat pieces and Seth used his Air powers to move his saw, while he was lying on the ground, whistling. I was the only one sweating and actually creating one hell of a backache. After an hour, I had enough of it.
'That's it!' I yelled, and threw my saw away. 'She can eat the bloody wood for all I care!' I sat down on the ground, legs crossed, fuming.
'Does this mean Your Grumpiness is finally ready to tell his humble companions what's bothering him?' Seth asked.
'NO!' I yelled and crossed my arms too.
'Geez okay. Fine, sort it yourself.' And I heard him turn around and walk towards Ayele.
'Wait.' I couldn't help myself, I had to talk to someone. I turned around and looked at them. 'I need to ask you something.' They exchanged a glance and then sat down.
'Well...ehm..' Suddenly I had trouble finding the right words. 'There's this thing...and...'
'I never thought I'd live to see this day. Flynn stammering over his words.' Seth said, clearly enjoying himself. I glared at him, Fire appearing at my hands. Too much anger.
Ayele smacked Seth on the head. 'Knock it off.' And then, looking at me 'Iorwen?'
I nodded, putting out my Fire. 'Yes. Do you have any idea how it's possible that one moment I'm stronger and the next moment, she is?' Silence.
'You mean verbally stronger? Or her Element?' Seth asked, confused.
'No, I mean physically stronger. Imagine Rana pinning down your wrists and you can't pull free.' Seth chuckled and then his face went blank. 'No way.'
'I'm afraid it's true.'
'But how's that possible?'
'That's what I've been dying to know.'
'I can't believe you haven't figured it out yet.' Ayele said, shaking his head.
'You mean you know?' I asked.
'Of course.'
'Mountain Man, this it the moment to spill.' Seth told him.
'It's all about you Elements really. As you know, I hope, Fire and Water are opposites. As are Wind and Earth.' We nodded. 'Well, that makes them equal, they're the same strength. So the amount determines the strongest.'
'I don't understand.' I said, frowning. Ayele sighed.
'If you light a flame as big as your fist and line it up against an ocean, will the water vaporize, or will the flame go out?'
'My guess is the flame will go out.' I answered him.
'Exactly. The other way round, if you light this whole forest versus a cup of water.'
'The water will vaporize.' I said.
'Precisely. Do you get it now?
'No. What does our Element has to do with it?'
'Everything. Your Element defines your nature, so this rule also applies in strength. The one in control, the one who's master of the situation, is the strongest. Of course, normally you would've had a head start, being a guy, but Iorwen is an elf and they are pretty strong- even the women.'
'Mountain Man, you're a genius.' Seth declared solemn.
I jumped to my feet, pacing around. It explained everything.
'And of course she knew after...I'm so stupid!' I fell flat on my back on the ground.
'She knew after what? What's going on between you two?' Seth asked, bobbing up and down with curiosity. Ayele didn't say anything, but his eyes shone with interest.
I told them what had happened this afternoon.
'Yeah, I'd be grumpy too.' Seth agreed with me.
'But why?' Ayele asked. 'Why would she do that?'
'I kind of did the same thing to her.' I confessed.
Seth whistled.
'Do you have an death wish?' Ayele added, only half joking. 'Provoking an elf...'
I shrugged. 'I'm actually quite enjoying myself. It's just...'
'You like her, don't you?' Seth guessed.
'What? Did Rana tell you?!' I couldn't believe she told anyone.
'Ha, she knew? Why am I not surprised?' Seth mused. 'But no, I figured this out all by myself.' He added, after exchanging a quick grin with Ayele.
'You're just not as mysterious as you think you are.' Ayele laughed his deep, rumbling laugh at seeing my resentful face.
'I may have been banished and been alone for a hundred years, but I've got your kind all figured out. You've got the looks, the charm and you're dangerous in a way. And so you attract hordes of girls, whom are all more than willing to love you. You don't love them in return, they're just sources of attention and physical pleasure. After some time, you lose interest and dump them for another toy.' I winced, knowing in my heart it was true. Ayele was silent, his face clouded with something I couldn't place. Guilt? Shame?
'And how do you know all this?' I asked.
'Easy' Ayele said, smiling a smile that didn't reach his eyes. 'I was once actually like you, until I made the biggest mistake of my life. It cost me the love of my life and my place among my people.'
I didn't dare ask what had happened, it didn't look like he wanted to talk about it.
'But. You still have the choice.' Ayele said, his face friendly again. 'Because you're in doubt. You want Iorwen, if not physical, than for the challenge. She's the first, next to Rana, who you can't win over the usual way.'
'Trust me, you can delete Rana from that little list.' Seth said, rolling his eyes. I couldn't help but grin, he was still mad about that.
'Anyway. Iorwen is cold. Elves are bad with emotions, because they can't let go of control, the consequences can be..too much to handle.'
'I don't care.' I said, determined.
'In that case, good luck.' Seth said, grinning. 'Normally, I would've said something like 'show your emotions, chicks always fall for that' but I have a hunch it's not going to work with Iorwen.'
'Oh so that's how you won Rana over. I knew it was a trick. Rana's not that stupid.'
'That may be. But at least I have emotions.'
Before I could think up another witty reply, Ayele stopped us. He keeled down to the ground, examining something.
'Guys, we have a problem.' I looked over his shoulder and my heart skipped a beat.
Visible in the mud were fresh wolf paw prints and they were headed directly to our camp.
