Don't Let Alcohol, Drug or Porn Addictions Control Your Life

Many people all over the world suffer from life-inhibiting addictions, whether it be to drugs, alcohol or sex. The reason addictions are so wide spread is because addictions are the instinctual way that people try to regain control over their lives. You might notice that addictions are worst when there is a particularly dramatic period of life ensuing. Think about it: The businessman working long hours and under strict quotas from management might turn to sex as a relief and become dependent on it. Think about the homeless person who can't afford anything but drugs. The feeling he gets from drugs becomes the only thing he looks forward to, and therefore, it takes control. The woman in an unhappy marriage who stays home all day turns to alcohol as a cure for boredom and sadness. All of these are examples of how an addiction starts and then can manage to take hold of a person's entire life.

What people don't realize about addictions is that instead of them taking control of an aspect of their lives, the addiction actually takes control of them instead. This means that now, instead of being a slave to work or sadness, a person will become a slave to their addiction and they will do anything possible to get their next fix.

Talking to people about their addictions is especially difficult because, often, they don't even realize why there is cause for alarm. This is why, if you suspect a loved one of being addicted to something, you should go about addressing it in a kind, caring way. Make sure they understand that the only reason you are concerned is because of your love for them. If you bring up the subject in a confrontational way, you will alienate the person and cause them to rely even heavier on whatever they are addicted to.

No matter what the reasons behind the addiction, anyone who is addicted to a substance or act needs help although they may not realize it right away. When attempting to help someone with an addiction, at first there should be no mention of going to the hospital or psychiatrist. Reach out to them and connect with them first. Remember that you want to gain their trust and love and make them understand that they are putting their life in danger. It is also recommended that you catch them when they are not stoned or drunk because if they are, they will not be thinking clearly.

In the end, many people who suffer from life-threatening addictions need someone to reach out to them and tell them everything is going to be okay. The bottom line is that a person suffering from an addiction needs to know that they can be in control of their life without the reliance on their addiction. Sometimes people come to this conclusion on their own, and sometimes a person needs medical help coming to that conclusion; everyone is different. You should never give up on the person.
